Playing for fun?

No,I play the game for fun during the week with either workmates or with my 14 year old son.

Weekends are reserved for club competitions.

Nothing wrong in playing for fun, plenty of time to attempt the impossible type shot you would not normally try.

On the New Golf Thinking day there was a good section about this which really hit home with me. The gist of it is that there is nothing wrong with playing for fun, but if you do that then make sure you do it in a nice sunny country with some good mates and can have a nice meal afterwards. As it is difficult to play for both fun a lot of the time but also expect to improve that much.

This was a problem I had as all my games are friendly games and not comps, and I am in golf to enjoy myself. So as soon as I mess up up a hole I'd kind of not worry too much about things and not really concentrate as much as I should. But it was pointed out that I need to focus a bit more on thinking about my shots etc etc if I want to improve. Of course I still intend to have fun and I imagine there will be games on golf weekends where I have emptied a hip flask or two where fun is the name of the game. But I will be focussing more on trying to score better from now on.

Depends. I am trying to get my handicap as low as I can but contrary to popular belief I'm enjoying the journey too. Of course it's no fun when we are playing badly but as long as I feel that I am working hard on the stuff I need to and practicing well, I can put up with the backward steps knowing I'll move towards my aim of single figures. Even if I am playing horribly, the company is usually good and its always good to be out playing regardless. I play for fun but with a purpose

I never differentiate - but then again I always play to enjoy it whether it's the final of the knockout or a friendly match.

I much rather go out for a casual 18 holes and bit the ball well rather than get myself all worked up for a competition because usually I'll end up bottling it and get frustrated with myself

Its a different kind of fun.

I am a novice when it comes to club comps but I still manage to have fun (even going back to the tee for shot number 7)

Midweek practice friendly matches with a pint as the prize.. But I will also have fun trying to reduce that HC...

When its not fun I will stop.

what is this NEW THINKING rubbish coming from, sounds like one of those tree hugging types,my idea of FUN is doing something i enjoy even if i do it badly i dont need some mumbo jumbo to explain it to me,GOLF is a FUN game and if you take it to serious to cause you to get annoyed PACK it in a do something else.

Competition golf .. Id replace fun with enjoyment , i enjoy my golf, i enjoy the challenge , i enjoy TRYING to get my handicap down , i enjoy the company and the outdoors ..

Society golf is fun , sometimes 5&half hour society golf NO fun ha

Three questions I asked myself when I was mentally beating myself up about how I played.
1 Do I play as a hobby? Yes.
2 Will I ever turn pro? No
3 Do I go out to have fun?
This was the critical question for me as if I play for fun then why on earth am I crucifying myself ever time I have a bad shot/hole/round.
Now I only play for fun whether it be a bounce game, a club comp or even a team match. Don't get me wrong I still want to be as competitive as I can and to try my best to win but most of all I go out and have fun. It's also improved my scores as I now put far less pressure on myself.

It's all Fun! whether it's casual fun, practice fun or competition fun, or serious (competition) fun!

When it gets too serious, it's time to re-assess why you are doing it!

All my games are for fun, don't bother these days with medals or comps. I play a lot of rounds myself during the week when I can escape from work for a few hours

It was me, and I didn't actually say that people shouldn't play for fun, I said that golf is not meant to be fun. I thought the angry face smiley would hint at the intended sarcasm but obviously not. Can we get an irony smiley please GM?

Why anyone would play a game they don't enjoy, I do not know. Even if I'm playing crap in a comp, I'd still rather be playing than not.

What a load of codswollop. I though there may be something in this thinking thing but not now.
I play every game be it with mates or a comp, for fun/enjoyment call it what you will. But also strive to play each shot to the best of my ability.
