I've been invited to play at the Oxfordshire at the end of the month, and I got to wondering how much prepartion forum members go to when playing a course for the first time? Do you search on line, down load plans of the holes, or a scorecard? Or like me just turn up on the day and buy a stroke saver book in the pro-shop?

In years gone by if it was a competitive round or a match I'd have tried to get a practice round depending on how big an event it was.

These days with limited time and green fees being so high, I'll load the course into my SC5, maybe by a strokesaver (partly as a momento too) and try and get there in enough time to at least warm up properly and try the practice green out for the speed

Interesting question as i'm playing a new course tomorrow. I have a 36 hole County comp there on saturday so thought it wise to try it out beforehand. Using the County card for a half price round , loaded up the SC and will just go and see what the day brings.

I plan to use my driver on every hole possible to see whether it will be feasible to use it on the comp day.

I also have another 36 holer next week at a course I havnt played but I dont intend to visit it beforehand. I'm just going to rely on my wits and the SC

I'm firmly camped in the 'wing it' camp with murph!

When playing a new course I tend to play pretty well as I have no idea where any hazards are and tend to be a lot more gung ho than I am when I know what perils await me.

I'll do the research bit, but because so few golf club sites publish useful information I sometimes even go to the extent of trying to work out the course from a downloaded scorecard and googlemaps/google earth. that can be very difficult - imagine trying to work out the pga national and the brabazon at the belfry.
I'll download the course to SC and buy a shotsaver (SC would be so much better with a course plan).

Sometimes its better to not know where the trouble is and not be affected mentally by it.

That said I used to try and always play a practice round if it was a comp on the new course.

If it was a knock with friends on a trip then I just wanted to know whether the 150s were to the front or the middle. and enjoy the day!!!!

Noted :D

Have a quick look at the Internet, then make sure its a course on SC, then hope for the best.

Usually ends with a return to the course, as I know I left a lot out there, not knowing the course ;)
