I agree, providing the player can justify his score when the marker comes to attest it. If a player has been hacking his way out of the jungle and possibly been taking practice swings, I would want to know his score when he gets clear.

You would like to know it, but the other player is under no obligation to provide it at that time (any stroke play format).

Combining Match Play and Stroke Play
The combining of match play and stroke play is discouraged as certain Rules are substantially different between the two formats. But there will be times when players either request to combine the two forms of play or, having done so on their own, request a ruling. The Committee should make its best efforts to support players at these times and should use the following guidelines in doing so.

When players request to combine match play and stroke play

If a Committee chooses to allow players to play a match while competing in a stroke-play competition, it is recommended that the players be advised that the Rules for stroke play apply throughout. For example, no concessions are allowed and if one player plays out of turn, the other does not have the option of recalling the stroke.

It is part of the Guidance to Committees in helping them act in ways that support the 2019 Rules of Golf. There are no "Decisions" in 2019, having been replaced by Interpretations and Clarifications.

A.No. Rule 33-1 states that certain special Rules governing stroke play are so substantially different from those governing match play that combining the two forms of play is not practicable and is not permitted. The results of matches played and the scores returned in these circumstances must not be accepted.

Can you provide the old Decision number for this and the year it was in the Decisions book?

Legally, yes but the player could face the problem of his marker refusing to sign his card and the bother of having to sort it out with the committee. Is it worth the hassle?
I saw such a situation many years ago and although the committee accepted the score the player's reputation was affected for some time.

In that case, I would question the marker's integrity as much as the players.

See the final couple of sentences of Rule 3.1a(1) - which makes specific reference to the committee procedures that rulefan posted. That the rule references the procedure means that combination of the two forms of golf are inherently allowed under the rules (albeit, as per the guidance, discouraged)

why would you not tell your oppo what you had scored if you are in a MP situation???

if the hole has not been completed - to confuse them - so they wouldn't know whether to play safely or aggressively. Or is it that in MP players must advise of strokes played so far on the hole when asked.
