Yesterday I hit a low punch down the treeline between knee and waist height, which lodged directly into the open pocket of someone elses bag. Anyone know what the ruling would have been in this situation if it had happened in competition? The player who's bag it lodged in wasn't in our group. He was coming down the adjacent fairway in the same treeline.

do you not just drop the ball as near to where it stopped and play from there without penalty, or go back and retake the shot with no penalty.... obstruction by outside agency or whatever???

interesting one, but probably one that will never ever happen to you again!

No penalty, when I was playing the medal for my card a week ago I hit a bag that was on another tee :o and was told no penalty, annoying as it caused my ball to stop about 100 yards less on a par 5 as it runs parallel.

Since the bag was nothing to do with the player who hit the ball or the "match" being played , it's just an obstruction - and relief taken accordingly - ie note spot on ground directly under the ball, take ball out of bag, move bag & drop ball onto spot below it's original position. No penalty.

Think back to Faldo, the plastic bag and the referee.
Drop, no penalty.
:)

Presume it's a woman gone OTT on the surgery front who he fancied but 'drop, no penalty' is a bit abrupt as an opening gambit.

19-2. By Player, Partner, Caddie or equipment
If a player's ball is accidentally deflected or stopped by himself, his partner or either of their caddies or equipment, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke. The ball must be played as it lies, except when it comes to rest in or on the player's, his partner's or either of their caddies' clothes or equipment, in which case the ball must through the green or in a hazard be dropped, or on the putting green be placed, as near as possible to the spot directly under the place where the ball came to rest in or on the article, but not nearer the hole.

Exception 1: Ball striking person attending or holding up a flagstick or anything carried by him — see Rule 17-3b.

Exception 2: Dropped ball — see Rule 20-2a.

(Ball purposely deflected or stopped by player, partner or caddie — see Rule 1-2.)

This doesn't apply in this case as it didn't strike the "Player, Partner, Caddie or their equipment"

Free drop under the point above which the ball is suspended.

This wasn't the play, partner, or caddies though - it was a different group. No penalty.

Similar thing happened in a stableford (2 vs 2), the one of the other team (opponent) thinned a ball into the club organiser of my bag 100 yds away. Again, no penalty, and a drop (rule 19-3). If we'd been on the same side, then 19-2 and the penalty would have applied.

So, if it yourself or your gear (strokeplay or matchplay), its a penalty. If its your partner (in matchplay), its a penalty. All other cases, its not a pen. I think thats right...

So normally if it is your playing group there is a penalty but as this was a different group no penalty.

It's best to think of it this way. If it hits someone/anyone who is part of your "team" or your "side" (or their kit) then it's a penalty. So this is you, your partner, your caddie etc. Penalty presumably because it is regarded as trying to influence the ball.

If it hits anyone else not connected to your side - which includes your opponent/caddie etc - then it counts as rub of the green or luck or whatever - so no penalty.
