anyone ever used these for practicing there short game?

been thinking about it recently as aposed to jus going down the practice grounds. Gives me more of a target to play for etc

we have a 9 hole par 3 course.

Play it on my lunch hour when I work from home. Sometimes I go out and just hit lots of chips and practice shots from 30/40 yds.

I get better results from trying to round in 30 shots or less as it creates a wee bit of pressure. Think my mind wanders and I lose focus if I am just hitting chips etc. Chipping improves alot when I get a chance to go out and gets worse when I stop using it :)

i use a par 3 course adjourned to the range i use and it is far better than just hitting shot after shot to a flag stuck in the ground at the range,it helps to hone my distance perception and if its quiet i hit bunker shots from different positions to the green i tend not to put out as the green are not to good and i don't want to get used to having to smash the ball just to get it to the hole.

Is that castle hawk by any chance?

I use one thats literally 500 yrds from my house. Its attached to the range and has a 30 quid unlimited use. Brilliant as the longest hole is 155 yrds which is pretty decent for a p&p. Me an a coule of mates regularly have it all to ourselves.

I have a couple that I use but both are a test of your full game. Sudbrook Moor is a superb 9 hole course and a reasonable test. You can play all day on their for very little money and is great for learning or to practice. The other one is the Par 3 course at Rutland Water. Loads of variety, great fun and you get to use most clubs in your bag. Ideal for a warm up before playing the full 18 or for practice. I am a great fan of 9 hole and par 3 courses, they are great fun, great for practice and ideal to learn on. There are times when I have played a cramped 18 hole course thinking that they would have been better off putting a really good 9 hole course there instead.

There is one in a place near Rainford close to where I work and it does serve a purpose. It only costs a fiver to play.
On another note, Formby Hall has a lovely par 3 course with plenty of sand and water to boot. I think they have even tried to recreate the island hole at Sawgrass. If your ever in the area, its certainly worth an hour of your time!

I play on my local one atleast once a week, but I'm still hopeless.

I would like to play on some others near High Wycombe/Beaconsfield if anyone has some good suggestions?

It has helped my game around & on the greens, which is a good job as my 30-200 yard game is awful and my 200-500 yard game is beyond comment.

One thing that does concern me is ours is a very cramped course, it isn't hard to send a ball two fairways over, and I have seen someone leather a ball four fairways over as it left the tee at 45 degrees to the left of the tee box. If you're having a bad game that it plays on your mind that you could be inconveniencing others, or even putting them in harms way with errant balls.

There is a 9 hole pitch and putt attached to the range I use and another at Lavender Park in Ascot. The principle is fine, small greens fiddly tight bunkers etc but the greens are shocking and so the ball reacts more like hitting a fairway than a putting surface and so it defeats a lot of the purpose

The range I use has a 9 hole par 3 course set around its perifery. It's a pretty straight forward little course that only needs a pitching wedge and putter but is good for a bit of pitching practice. There are also a few courses in the area that have 9 hole par 3 academy courses for young juniors to play.

I live not too far from Nailcote Hall where they hold the British Par 3 Championship, I've never played it before but I'm determined to set that right this year.

Anybody played it before?

Sounds like you are referring to Wycombe Heights par 3 course, a short 18 hole course. if so its one of the best short courses within a country mile, I wouldnt say that the fairways are too close,

The only other par 3 9 hole course I know of is at My Gaff, Aylesbury Park, most of the holes are between 60 and 85 yards, its quite quiet and ideal for practise sessions

Sounds like you need a lesson or 2 to get you on the right track

I love Cambridge Lakes in... well err Cambridge!

Its holes go from about 90 to 135 but on a windy day the longest holes can be a 6 iron as its so open and exposed. It has two well placed water features that suck balls in and some half decent bunkering but the quality of them is not so good.

My best round there is +1 gross. Never seem to put a birdie in a good round but always seem to get one if I play round twice. I should really score more than one around but the greens are darn hard to read!

great post, must have been reading my mind, I am considering doing this at delapre as it as par 3 and pitch and putt. the pitch and putt is "£2.50 which is pretty good, might go mad and have bowl of chips afterwards...........the sort made from a potato of course.............

There's a par 3 course at Portroyal driving range near the airport, but I haven't played it.

Any of the Embra contingent on here used it..? If so, what is it like?

Its closed! No longer! an ex driving range
Heard the other day that Embra Leisure are going to open a driving range at Meadowbank - pure rumour tho - can't find any evidence for it

Bloomin' 'eck Heidi, that's a shock

Thanks for letting me know.
I was there in their last few days before Xmas. Went past it the other week when we were going to the airport, the building has been knocked down! I thought someone might have bought it - but no.
Edinburgh Leisure do have two 9 holes that are kinda pitch and putt.
I sometimes use Swanstons par 3 which is great for your short game. I usually go with a member, no idea if you can pay to use it or not.
