Ping or Benross Drivers

Until recently I had the Ping Anser 9.5 driver and the Benross Rip Speed 2 driver both with stiff shafts, I felt that they were similar in distance but preferred the feel off the clubface of the Ping and could hit it with a more penetrating flight.
I bought the Ping secondhand for £120 and paid £130 for the Benross new, just sold the Benross for £50 bargain! but as the guys have said the product is good but because it is not a TOP Brand they are very good value clubs.
I play Benroos Rip speed 2 hybrids and Hot speed 2 irons with graphite shafts and have reduced my handicap from 6 to 4 over the last yearm so cant be that bad.

The club builder who made my clubs does a lot of work for a Senior tour player who uses Ping equipment. He told me that their build quality is very poor.

Don't underestimate Benross.......very good British manufacturer and great value...able to keep costs down as they don't sponsor any tour pro's.

RIP Speed 2 is a great driver, I used it ( and the 3 wood ) at West Hill in the Benross Be our Tour Pro day and was very impressed. Accuracy and forgiveness was spot on although the length doesn't quite match my SLDR, hence its gathering dust in the garage, but great club.

I did keep the irons, putter and the hybrids in the bag though and have been using them ever since.

After a while in my recent driver testing 2-days the Benross driver was a big surprise, took me a few balls to get to grips with it, but once I did, Boooom.

If you look at many Golf Monthly equipment reviews you will find that Benross is frequently picked as the best value for money, many more times than other names, but not only that, they are also rated as the best in comparison to all the others on test. Unfortunately they suffer from the stigma of being cheaper than the top manufacturer's, like Ping, and as we all know, there is a lot of snobishness associated with 'whats in the bag.' Pick the club that works for you and laugh at those who have paid through the nose for a fancy name.

This is very much the case, a lot of people won't admit to brand snobbery but it exists in all of us to a degree I believe. I think stigmas like this can be broken down in time though, just look at Skoda as an example.

Just because its cheap and excellent value in comparison to other drivers made by various manufacturers, does not mean its inferior in any way.

Thinking back more to my testing day, the Benross would have figured in my top 5 and I had the privileged to hit 18 different drivers of which some have only just been released.

Oh no, not the dreaded he said, she said! They must be rubbish then!
I'm currently batting with a set of 25 year old eye 2 irons. Pretty good build quality from my experience, but then I haven't asked the guy down the street what he thinks yet.........

To confirm what drive4show has said

Ping had an issue with a number of the early sets of the Ping I25 irons - a lot of the heads where showing signs of "bubbles" and "flaking" with the finsih on the top line especially - a guy i play with has had 5 of his irons replaced already and currently contemplating having a full refund - and he isnt the only person.

But is this not an isolated batch of clubs, where something has clearly gone wrong in the manufacturing process, and something which Ping readily admit to? It hardly warrants such a sweeping generalisation that Ping clubs are of poor build quality. They surely would have folded years ago.

Looking at your sig I would guess you trust and believe in ping!! :o

I'm always a bit suspicious of bags with clubs from only one manufacturer in.

Have you got any ping clothing? Maybe a matching cap?

Just trying to get a mental picture:D

There have also been many reported instances of the weight ports falling off the back of i20 irons. 2 of my friends have had this problem.

He said, she said........

No, I got the G20's when they were first released and had loads of flaking and my irons were going back 1 at a time over various periods within 6 months of purchase. I sold them in the end inside a year, so not isolated to even 1 model!

I understand ( without going into sources ) that its not the first time and has happened with both the G20 and G25 irons also

You can't pull the wool over my eyes!! You may go on about enjoyment being most important etc etc. I've seen you in the mirror at RCP. Staring at your reflection, shouting 'I am Sergio'!!! :D

Rich was next to you with his perming lotion. Apparently he was 'Leo':o

I've never heard of a golfer called Leo ???

It cant have been Sergio - i won the big one :D

Had a quick google search for a golfer called Leo - comes up blank. Are you sure it wasnt Louis ?

I had a RIP Speed 2 driver, and I loved it! Feels really solid off the face.

Sadly me and my bag look like we've been assaulted by a Nike shop. (also the shaft wasn't stiff enough, but that's my fault!)

Well I stand corrected, and somewhat surprised that this is happening within such a big name. Maybe this is due to a cost cutting measure, a cheaper manufacturer, a by-product of the global recession. Either way it's not good for such a recognised make to be producing rubbish.
I'm still not sure it warrants the generalisation of poor build quality. There are many many set's of Ping clubs out there, pre G20/25 which are built well and have stood the test of time. But, they need to be careful. A good reputation is difficult to gain, and oh so easy to lose.

........

You have a reputable source for this of course?
I would be interested in reading about it as I will be in the market to replace my eye 2's in the spring.

Any ping products I've owned have felt really good quality, much better than some Taylormade or Callaway, especially fairway woods & hybrids.
