Apologies if this topic has already been posted somewhere else.

I'm relatively new to the game of golf and only played my first 18 hole course last summer. I'm 6ft4", have a standard set of clubs and i'm thinking of getting custom fit.

A couple of months ago I booked in with Direct Golf to get fitted, but after reading some of the reviews online I decided against it. However I have recently found out that they offer a Ping custom fitting service in store. Has anyone had the Ping custom fitting service and what was your experience?

Thank you in advance.

Where do you live? Is direct golf your only option

This ^^^

Ping are awesome for static fit, they will make sure your wrist to floor or hand to floor measurement is correct. It is not necessarily the case that you will need longer clubs because your 6,4. A pall of mine who is 6+ uses shorter clubs than me as he has arms like a gibbon.

If you let us know where abouts you are in the country, someone may be able to give you a good place to get fitted.

Welcome to the forum.

Thank you for your reply. I'm in West Yorkshire in between Leeds and Huddersfield.

I mentioned Direct Golf as I've seen the G25 irons which seem reasonably priced for my first set of fitted clubs.

At address the angle of my hip with a long iron is closer to 45 degrees.

Personally, if you're going down the Ping route try and get to Gainsborough. I'd always try and go to a manufacturer.

Do you need to be a member at your club to do this? On their website it says you must go through your ping retailer to book an appointment.

How would this differ from the direct golf Ping fitting service, as I've been told they follow the same procedure.

I would have more faith in Ping fitters than those in a retailer. I'd prefer a pro fitting rather than a DG or AG. The thing with a Ping fitting or any other manufacturer is they have far more specs to try and it is an experience in itself.

You won't need to be a member at a club to get the PING fitting, the majority of golf clubs, driving ranges and golf shops in my area (South Yorkshire) are authorised PING dealers and fitting centres. I think the PING fitting process is pretty much standardised now, what most pros are trained to deal with. Maybe a few years ago, going to the PING headquarters in Gainsborough was the only option to get fitted clubs, but now with advances in technology, your local pro can fit you up. Even my two local ranges have the simulators now :D If you can get to Gainsborough, then brilliant, but if not, some of my local clubs and ranges look dead tidy with club fittings, there's bound to be some near you. I can't imagine DG and AG being that bad, if they have the equipment then why not? They have the capital behind them to give a decent service :D

I'm 6'2" and I was fitted with PING green dots, standard shafts and standard grips. They were the first proper clubs I had, the rest were just eBay and Sports Direct specials, and they definitely inspire you to play more confidently.

Would the direct golf fit not just follow the same procedures as at the Ping Centre? http://www.direct-golf.co.uk/ping/fitting/

I pretty sure the photo on the direct golf site is my local shop because it looks like Huddersfield's stadium in the background. I also see that my local club offers Ping custom fitting, but are the same irons likely to dearer through a pro shop?

The reviews I read for standard custom fitting at DG were not good, and people felt they had just been left to their own accord and offered the John Letters range. I'm sure Ping gain more business but having these authorised fitting centres at DG but surely they wouldn't do it if they felt it would tarnish their reputation?

i think i'll contact my local club and see what they can offer. I'm just concerned that the set of irons i'm interested in would be more expensive than at DG.

If you have the fitting at ping hq you don't buy the clubs there and then. They give you the fitting spec for you to take away and send a copy to your pro if required. I'm 6' 2" and have 1/2 inch longer. You can then order the clubs from wherever you can get the best price. I loved the fitting at ping, they do charge £20 for iron fitting or £30 for the bag fit.

They should do, like I said earlier, it seems to be a standardised procedure for all PING dealers with the fitting, and if they don't do fitting, the will host a fitting day when the truck comes.

I'm sure there's a direct golf on the left-hand side as you go into Huddersfield town centre from the M62, I occasionally go there with work. I think that's the one near the stadium.

Generally speaking, a pro shop would be more expensive than a retailer, but not in all cases. If you want to be cheeky, you could ask the pro to pricematch DG, and hope that they can. As for DG's fitting procedure, it depends what they did. If they just gave you half a dozen shaft and head combinations and asked which one you prefer, then I wouldn't consider that custom fitting. And just going around the racks in the shop, trying to find some irons that suit someone, settling on some John Letters' isn't custom fitting either. Whereas taking measurements, asking what you want, and actually going into a monitor, and having ball flights and other data studied to recommend you a suitable combination, then that is more what PING specify on their website, and if they actually do it, then good on them, that's what I'd call proper fitting.

A pro has a professional duty to advise you (sort of), so it's his job to put you in the right direction, whereas a kid in a big retailer might be on minimum wage and a zero-hour contract, just want to make a quick sale and get rid of you. Not all of them, naturally, but you can see where I'm coming from :D

If you like DG's price, why not ask them to book you in a Ping HQ for a fitting. They must have an account to be able to sell the clubs in the first place.

Try the belfry. I've just baught a set of ping ie irons for
£580 4 to pw. Thats £110 cheaper than dg and American golf

I've spoke to my pro club and they sell the irons for the same price however they don't use a launch monitor. How important is this?

Why not try the web fitting system on PING's website.

Then go to a PING retailer for a fitting and see how the two basic specs compare.

PING HQ got back to me today about my enquiry. They couldn't fit me in next week when Im heading down south but stated that any company that has an account with PING such as DG and AG would offer the same service as they're trained to do so.

I booked in with DG at Huddersfield with one of the managers. The service was good and I was happy with the fitting, however I don't know any different as it was my first time.

I started off hitting balls with 1/2 inch longer to warm up and then measured my wrist to floor. I then used an inch longer and hit balls on the ping board to determine the lie angle needed. I then tried the different grips. So I've ordered G25 Irons 1inch longer, stiff shafts, green lie angle and the orange grip.

He also spent some time looking at my grip, which I felt he didn't have to do!

Thank you everyone for your advice and I shall let you know how I get on with them once they've arrived.
