So Ping have decided to "partner" Michael Phelps in his bid to get to single figures. What! he's a Multi Millonaire for God sake. Surely he can afford to do what the rest of us have to do in our bid to get to single figures, walk into Ag or where ever and flipping buy a set. Stories like these get my goat and make my blood boil. I have to save for my stuff.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest, sure it's no different to the GM PYB challenge they ran with Ping.

If he does it good on him, if they succeed with him what does it mean a nice bit of advertising for their fitting and GI clubs perhaps.

That's life and golf - he may get free kit but he will be tied in to public appearances and PR so you could say he is 'earning' them - just in a different way to opening his wallet.

blood boil seriously, cuases of blood boil is trying to make a docters appointment for 6 months!!!! when they only accept calls for 1/2 hour on a monday. just glad it isnt life saving medication im on, but i wont let it get me down i always keep my pecker up

Is that why you need to see the doctor and get the medication. Phelps is a sporting icon and so Ping will get plenty of PR and so it seems a win win situation

If Michael Phelps, a supremely fit giant with work ethic and focus on a scale none of us can comprehend, all the time in the world on his hands and enough money to buy the best of everything from coaching to gear, wants to get to single figures, he will.

Ping are along for the ride. Shooting fish in a barrel with the greatest (well, most decorated) Olympian ever though. Doesn't annoy me that he's getting it for free, it annoys me that Ping would think that we would think that this is some sort of great achievement that they will in part be responsible for.

I am surprised that we do not see more of this to be honest.

What is going to get Ping the most publicity, giving clubs to an existing sporting celebrity where there name will potentially be seen all over the place and who could be an attraction at Ping publicity events or giving clubs to a low end professional who may never make it to a major tour and whose name will only be known to a few in the golfing fraternity who will probably know all about Ping and their products anyway.

if you follow some people on Twitter I suspect that, for example, Taylormade get more out of the famous cricketers, celebs etc who they give gear to than they do out of all but their top pros. Certainly they are on their plugging the gear fairly regularly. Look at Callaway, I suspect that they also get more out of giving gear to Alice Cooper than they do form a number of the lower end pros they may support.

When it come to marketing it is all about publicity and Phelps would be a good and inexpensive option.

I'll wager he's down to scratch in a couple of years - he's got to be the sort of person that will have a natural aptitude anyway but being "the most decorated Olympian ever" he's got the determination and work ethic to shoot through to scratch in no time!
