Peter Alliss inducted into Hall of Fame

I know he's not everyone's cup of tea and personally I find his approach nowadays is a bit too whimsical and rambling.

However there is no doubt that he has seen and done more in golf than most who write and broadcast about the sport and he can still deliver the occasional killer insight or hilarious line. He is still the "voice of golf" for most who follow the game.

One thing I particularly remember Alliss saying was how his dad Percy, who was a top pro in the 20's and 30's, would tell him about playing with Harry Vardon, and to think that in Alliss we still have that link to the history of the game, which seems so long ago, is pretty special to my mind. I like (and these days prefer) Butch Harmon for the same reason. It adds a different perspective to their comments on the game. These guys have golf in their blood.

Grew up listening to him, and my old man loves his patter. Agree with Mashie on teh ramblings, but he does coem out with the classic lines from time to time.

We need ex-players to pick up the mic as they can give an insight into the game - not ex-cricketers or ex-footballers who are golf fans.

Monty can hand back his mic now as far as I am concerned.

I would love to have a golf version of McEnroe in the commentary box. Listening him tear into players is great as no-one can argue with him when it somes to "show me your medals son"

Aliss deserves his place in Hall of Fame no doubt, but time for him to ramble off into the sunset

Can't stand the guy.
Mainly due to his business interests in the early 1990's.

Probably the reason he and a couple of other obvious candidates of that period have not been knighted.

He does seem to be improving as a golf commentator lately, went through a dodgy spell for a few years.

If an EPL footballer did what Alice did on the playing field they would be fined £100,000 and banned for 6 weeks.
Funny that some golfers see it as class whilst footballers think differently.

At his acceptance speach he raised a finger to his old school teacher.

70 years is a long time to hold a grudge.

[ ..or if it is re. earlier post Google 'Compton Holdings golf' and follow the money, Allis was the mouthpiece for the company.]

Peter Alliss has been brilliant for golf. He genuinely means everything he says. Wish there were more guys around like him. True Gent. Well Done.

He joins other creditable inductees such as two former US presidents and M$rk M$cormack for their lifetime achievements to golf? Could understanding it if were for war and riding on the backs of the talented.

Personally I think there's nothing wrong with the induction. The voice of golf for my generation. Not sure about these so called dodgy business deals doon frae toon refers to but in my book Alliss has done a lot for the game over many decades
