I have got addicted recently to YOUTUBE golf Vlogs, mainly Rick Shiels and Peter Finch. I was watching an interesting one that could really help people to hit their driver straighter.

We all know about ball flight laws and how by looking at how your ball moves through the air can tell you your swing path and angle of face to that swing path.

So for instance we all know that if you swing out to in with club face open to the swing path it will start left and and turn to the right (pull fade).

So you now set about trying to change your swing trying to stop this out to in swing path. But you still can't seem to hit the ball straight with any consistency, so you out the big dog on the naughty step and try not to use it.

But what if we are just misinterpreting what we are seeing, maybe it is something more simple. Maybe the actual cause of the problem is that you keep striking it out of the heel of the club, that with a driver will cause it to start left and turn back to right, giving the impression of a pull fade.

i only thought about this as I just watched this video on it.

Good vid, lots of useful info.

Its always good to get a different perspective to what creates a good or bad shot.

This is why I put it up, might give some people something to consider over the winter months. If you look at the pros, a lot them do not set up with ball in the middle of the driver face. So that shows that even they swing in a way that either moves the Clubhead closer or further away from the body at impact.

there is also vertical gear effect. hit low on the face produces more spin. slightly higher on the face gives a high launch but reduces spin.

gear effect been mentioned on here numerous times. I only heard about it last year. very useful information.

1st I'd heard of it thanks for the info- makes it interesting.

Any info where you buy your impact tape Maninblack? The site mentioned in the vid is quite expensive- 8 quid for 22 stickers.... i'm guessing you don't get a lot of swings out of each sticker?

Good video. cheers.
I think I bought some impact stickers from Direct Golf, direct from the store though so probably not available online.

If it is like the tape they use during custom fitting then you will get up to around 15 hits before it knackered, that is if you keep hitting from the same spot. I think the idea is you can tape the face up, take 10 swings and see where the majority are striking. If for instance it seems to be high towards the toe, then try teeing down slightly and setting up with ball towards the heel. Hit another 10 and see what difference it has made to where you are striking the ball.

If it helps you to hit it straighter then your onto a winner as this change is easy to implement straight away.

I'm going to impact tape my driver up tonight to get a better idea. I used to find addressing the ball slightly towards the toe helped massively, but I'm going to put that theory into practice tonight!

Sometimes the smallest tweak works wonders, you just need to find what it is

I think i've found mine recently which coincided with a new driver purchase but as long as it continues i'll be happy.

apparently it is not just the speed of the closing or opening of the face on draw or fade bias drivers but the added weight positioned in such a way changes the gear effect too.

Rather than impact tape you can always wet / chalk your driver face, this will show where you are striking the ball.

Wetting works perfectly when it is cold as the moisture does not dry too fast

Really interesting link, thanks for posting that!

Also, for the people asking where to buy impact tape from, try watching the video in the link, it tells you! ;-)
