All these threads right now with people clearly keeping lots of stats from different parts of the game got me thinking.

http://probablegolfinstruction.com/golf-scoring-statistics.htm

I saw this before and felt the strong relationships between G.I.R and pars per round worked out pretty good for my scores back end of last year. I also feel my G.I.R is getting better, as are the pars per round so it fills me with confidence that my average score would start to come down.

Just wondering, as you all seem to keep so many stats if you could compare your pars per round and G.I.R to see if gets close to you average score please?

Thanks guys.

My last 20 rounds give me 66.7% GIR which means I should be shooing 71 on average which I dont. I think the reason behind this is:
a) My putting isn't good enough
b) My bad holes tend to be double bogeys from erratic tee shots.

Thanks for the reply. I know its never going to be accurate to say, I hit 12 greens in reg today so I shot 71 but I do feel that it's as good an indicator as I've seen.

The positive is you know where your flaws are so I have complete faith you'll get yourself down.

I think as an rough indicator it is fairly accurate as long as the rest of your game is up to the level of you GIR.

Thanks I'm hoping for bigger & better things this year, I'm changing my swing which seems to be making my misses less prominent. I just need to dedicate some time improving my putting.

If you could bottle that up and sell it you'd be a millionaire! I know loads of blokes who'd like a less prominent misses ;)

Haha very good :D

66% GIR. Wow. I can only hope for that.

This year my aim is to top 50% GIR. Basically all the par threes and about half the par 4s. I am not a heavey hitter so the par 5s are right out the question.

On that note, does anyone know how to put a bit more punch into their drives without going too wayward.

I could be wrong but do you realise that GIR is par less 2? I just wondered with you saying the par 5's were out of the question, you have 3 to get on the green to make GIR, and only 1 on a par 3.

Sorry if you already realise this.

Taken from SS2 for the season so far

Fairways Hit: 42%
Greens In Reg: 19%
Putts Per Round: 34.14
Sand Saves: 9%
Birdie Conversion: 5%
Par Scrambles: 12%
Penalties Per Round: 0.50

It would say that I'm missing too many greens. I was struggling with the short game too so it just put too much pressure on the iron and the need to have to find a green and not chip. Now I can chip again it should start to improve as should the birdie and par scramble figures

In my last 17 rounds my averages are:

59% Fairways hit
54% G.I.R
31.94 Putts per round
9.33 Pars per round

There will definitely be a positive link between GIR and pars made simply because 99% of golfers will 2 putt from on the green more often than they will get up and down from off of it.

Its not everything though, just looking through my stats spreadsheet I have one round where I hit 78% GIR and shot a 77 (38 putts may have been the reason...) and another round with 11% GIR and shot a 74 (26 putts)...

Sadly I do realise GIR is par-2. Unfortunately I am just not that heavy a hitter, otherwise I go wayward.

The par 5s around my area are really bad. Really long AND uphill.

On the par 4s I am usually just off (within 20 yards) of the green with my second shot so it does not count.

What is:

Birdie Conversion
Par Scrambles

The software I use does not include that (or it does but I don't know it). The good thing is though we can request these stats be included and they usually do on the next update.

What is:

Birdie Conversion
Par Scrambles

I'm guessing, but I think birdie conversion is birdies/GIR, and par scrambles is missed green & par/missed greens.

The Par Scrambles to me though is slightly misleading at my level. I'm not too upset if I hit a horror drive, chip out and make bogey but it counts against par scrambles as a fail (I presume).
I'm more interested in how many times I get up and down from close to the green, regardless of whether it's for par or not.
