Percentage Golf.

Playing a ball from a bad lie brings out the worst in golfers. Most would opt for the greedy approach. In other words, press on toward the flag.
In many cases it's the best policy to play cautiously even if it means going backwards.
I think the option to play backwards for safety doesn't sit well with the brain as the goal is to go forward.
I'm as guilty as anyone else when stuck in the woody stuff. See a gap and aim for it, usually ends up in disaster though!

I wouldn't say percentage golf was boring, far from it. It seems a more well thought out approach to the game, playing cautiously and in a non reckless manner. It may appear slower though.

If you have the choice, leave an uphill putt.
No chance of racing it 8' past the hole unless you have the touch of a bull elephant.
If you putt past the hole, the second putt is your second chance of holing it. By leaving it short you don't get any

Blimey.....there are some odd ideas on this thread!!! (not directed at anyone in particular! :()

To me, % golf is about stepping on the tee to make a par or better.

If a 3 wood gets me close enough to hit a mid-iron, unless the fairway is super-wide, that'll be my play.

Once I've ruled out a straighforward par (no shot to green or too far!!) my next aim is to ensure a bogey.

Have I got any tips?....maybe for a beginner....but not for experienced players. Go with your own style....if making a 9 and having fun floats yer boat, who am I to disagree. I have fun, but for me, standing on the 10th having bagged 3 "fortunate" pars and 6 secure bogeys gives me more satisfaction. Sometimes, it's 6 pars and 3 bogeys....I'll take anything in between and to avoid those pesky doubles.

I'm sure that most on this Forum have formed their own idea now about how MWJ plays his game. It's tme to spill the beans....

During our recent round at Princes, he creamed a shot off the tee and was unlucky to hit it far enough to reach a faiway pot bunker. As he strode manfully into it I started to reach into my bag for a packet of cigars for him - this was surely going to be a Hamlet moment :D.

As he set up for the shot I thought "why is he playing this left handed?". He wasn't. He played the shot backwards out of the bunker and far enough back to be able to cream a fairway wood over the top of the lip leaving it only a few yards short of the green.

Percentage golf boring? No way . That bought a smile to his face, and to ours. Way to go Jon :)

There are times when you have to play percentage and there are times when you have to go for those pins that are tucked away or the big drive across the corner of a dogleg. Strokeplay or Matchplay. In a strokeplay competition there will be times when going for the pin could cost you dearly, a double or treble can be a card wrecker. In matchplay you may lose the hole but you walk onto the next tee and start again. Tips on percentage play can be handy but it varys on the game your playing, singles, betterball, stroke play and matchplay. To most golfers they cease to apply after a couple of holes.Having them as part of your course management and knowing when to apply them is the key.

Tiger Woods dosnt play percentage Golf . . . . :D

Yeah and he never takes an iron to the tee on the third day of play with a lead!!

Of course he does, even at times Seve (though he will never admit it) played percentage golf, golf is about getting around in as few shots as possible.
