People on Committees at Golf Clubs- Above their station in life!

Dont agree with you...........not one single bit. I pay good money and because someone is not prepaired to go on the council you have to shut up.

Funny you should say that, I was a Labour councillor for 8 years, never met a person who couldn't do it better than me or thought I was sh1te. Maybe thats what coloured my views on committees, rather just play golf now :D

Whilst I understand your point of view Shaun theres also the fact no one forced them to be committee members and they put themselves in that position and also have to take the good with the bad.

OK - it's very true that no-one is forced onto a committee. It's also very true that there are many committee members who have realised that, if no-one comes forward, the club cannot continue to run and they would be unable to play. My bone of contention is with those who are quite content to let others do the donkey work but reserve the right to criticise from the sidelines. All members pay their subs and have the right to voice concerns but to continue to moan and complain without the slightest intention of offering to help improve the situation is, to me, totally unacceptable.

I've been on the committee for a year now, and I don't believe I've changed at all. You'd of course have to ask some of the members at Westerham if they thought I had, but...

I was asked to become Men's Team Organiser, which involves getting teams of 8 or 10 players for friendly matchplay comps against other clubs. That came with a seat on the committee, so kind of had no choice, as I was happy to do the role.

I have a feeling that the only thing I've changed is having a little more understanding of how things work, so try to temper people's moans where I feel it appropriate, plus I'm more likely to suggest to people I'm playing with that they don't take short cuts over GUR, not replace divots, not rake bunkers, etc. But then that's stuff that all members should be doing anyway.

I do get very frustrated when people complain to me about the state of the course when I've seen them not repair pitchmarks, track through mud with electric trolleys, etc.

I've been on committees and to answer the original question in my experience 99% of the people I worked alongside were there for the right reasons and to drive the club forward. I have had issues with the course and other things at Royal Ascot but have always gone through the proper channels to voice these and the answers I've had although not always what I wanted to hear, were delivered politely and explained in a balanced way. To be fair the committee (with perhaps the exception of this years captain who is rarely seen at all - especially at weekends) are working hard in a tricky time for the club and I would say there are no hidden agendas. I don't think ours is a club that would allow anyone to get too many ideas above their station anyway
