Hi All,

Just a quick one to sound off really.

There is a member of my local club, who has appeared in a magazine (not sure if it was GM or TG). Anyway he was in the mag bragging of the fact that he has played over 1000 courses since he started playing.

I heard today that he is playing in Wales for 8 days and at each course he asks can he play for free as he will mention them if he gets a write up in another magazine.

Don't get me wrong a Freebie is always good, but this guy has 2 brand new cars, a motor home, new buggy, nice house and still wants clubs to allow him to pay for free.

I wish clubs would wise up to this and unless for charity (and then donate green fee's) Make sure every person pays for the round. So many people not only on this forum are struggling to afford a round every couple of weeks and this guy is mugging clubs off conning them.

Well my rant is over.

Anybody else know people who dont appreciate what other people have to put up with in the effort to play regularly???

I know what I'd say if I was in charge of the course. It seems a big ask on the premise that he "may" get another write up and on that basis alone I'd be asking him for his green fee.

Totally understand clubs giving a freebie for a chaity event. I did the Longest Day a couple of years back and Downshire gave me and HTL courtesy of the course and had a marshall out letting us through. A lot of clubs give freebies to charity days and I applaud that but this guy sounds like a real freeloader.

My friend was on the Committee of his golf club a few years back when a very well know footballer plying his trade at Glasgow Rangers at the time wrote to the club asking to join.

A few strings were pulled and he was asked to go up for an interview. This gentleman was probably on £10-£20k or more per week at the time as it was in the Souness era.

This person was told that the joining fee was £X and the yearly subs were £Y.

The reply was

"no , no you don't understand. I'm a celebrity, how it works is that I bring people here to play golf and through word of mouth and me the course is advertised."

This person was not given the free membership he craved or his ego thought he deserved.

Im a Rangers fan and theres a couple of names that spring to mind.

I dont understand why clubs would give rounds away like that. I can't afford to join a club yet this chancers getting free golf on the promise of mentioning them in an interview that may not ever take place.

Craw, name and shame the tight-fisted wee tyke! :D

It always strikes me a backwards that the more money people have the more they feel they are entitled to free stuff!!

Quite right of these places that have turned such requests away - it makes a mockery of those people who maybe struggle to pay their fees and work harder to make sure they can enjoy their membership if you allow this to happen.

Just a little reply about the footballer issue...

We have an ex premiership footballer and current non league manager at our club and I couldn't ever gain him turning around and saying anything of the sort for a free membership.

He's an absolute gent and a top guy to chat to and sets a fantastic example of a higher profile person and how to conduct themselves.

We had a well known Snooker Player do the same "I get free membership and i will play some matchs and you can charge people". On your Bike.

Clue, he recently died.

How do you think he got 2 brand new cars, a motor home, new buggy and a nice house? :D

Wouldn't do it myself but you have to admire his nerve!

The OP said it was the Souness era. My bets are on Butcher or John Brown.
