Penalty for Lowry

It's interesting that the movement occurs during the practice backswing, not the downswing, so it's probably the movement of Lowry on the ground that causes it rather than the swinging of club.
I realise that doesn't affect the penalty here but, in general terms, how are we supposed to approach our ball to play it if it's resting on an unstable raft of ground or grass?
Don't say, "Carefully."

You do see players hovering their clubs in situations like this.
I think the mistake he made was having a practice swing so near the ball in rough like that.
For a top pro he should really know better.

Find a similar piece of grass 10’ away from the ball.

I see that slight movement start when he's at the top of his practice backswing.

Have you seen the video from sky, when the are interviewing Shane, You can clearly see the ball move as his practice swing brushes the long blade of grass

I have. I think the logo starts moving before the clubhead is anywhere near the bottom of the practice downswing.
It doesn't matter - I was just using it as the basis of my question.

I don't mean during the practice swing. I'm talking about occasions where your ball is at rest on a raft of unstable flattened grass and even as you approach to identify it you can see that the raft is wobbling a yard away from where you're putting your feet.

You don’t get penalised for a ball moving unless you cause it to move by grounding your club.
Or that’s the way it used to be.

You can’t jump up and down but you can take your stance fairly.
Otherwise it would be impossible in the scenario you pose to play your shot.

Fair enough, I appreciate it might be difficult to enforce.

But can someone please answer me this: why is there no longer a penalty if you accidentally move your ball on the green? What makes that situation different?

Becuase there is deemed to be no potential advantage on the green given the consistent flat nature of the putting surface. Remember though there is a penalty if the ball is not replaced.

What is it that makes you disagree with people and then refuse to explain why, other than saying "it should be obvious" (or words to that effect)?
If they ask for an explanation, it's NOT obvious to them, and since it's obvious to you, why not be kind and actually explain?

It's now 'if the player caused it to move'. That covers a few options, not just grounding the club.

The problem I've got with it, is the camera really has to zoom in to capture it, otherwise no one is none the wiser.
It's also not the same for every player because there cant be a camera on every situation to 'see' if a ball moves, which isn't right in my opinion, should be the same scrutiny for every player if that is the route we are going down, I'm sure if he noticed, he would of called it on himself.

It's just been explained to you, you really think moving your ball on the green is comparable to accidentally moving it in the rough . That would leave it open the all sorts of abuse

Camera I believe, stand to be corrected, I'd be very surprised if the referee could have seen that with the naked eye.

I heard Graeme Storm on the radio talking about this. Apparently they have a rules official in a truck / room watching screens and if they see any potential issues they check them out. This person advised the official with the group of the penalty. The referee with the group hadn't seen it.
