I didn't want to hijack the laptop thread from earlier

I am going to start looking for a new PC, which I prefer to a laptop. I don't do gaming on it but it will be a home computer for internet, quite a bit of photography and an occasional slideshow and well as letter writing.

Any suggestions please?

I'm not a dell fanboy as such but their Vostro series are very hard to beat. Buy the graphics card seperately though, dell are not cheap for accessories and add ons.

I bought a new longer life battery for my laptop this week, 65 all in from amazon, dell wanted 108 PLUS the vat and delivery.

Thanks Brendy. What set me on this path is that my 5+ year old pc has a graphics card that is too old to work with the upgraded slideshow programme that I use

I would suggest that you look for something with the following spec

Intel I3 (2nd Generation) CPU Or I5 if you want to push the boat out
4GB RAM
1 Tb Hard Drive
Graphics card with 1 GB RAM
Windows 7 64 bit
DVDRW

All this can be found in the Dell Inspiron 620 for £379 inc VAT
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dell...uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&model_id=inspiron-620

Also thrown in is 15 months McAfee Internet Security and Office 2010 starter (Word & Excel basic versions)

Its a bit of a no brainer this

Of course this doesnt include a screen, either reuse the one you have or pop over to Ebuyer , you can pick up a 22 inch for about £100 these days

I put together a new desktop back in February. Despite being savvy enough to do most things with a desktop, there was ONE thing I wanted to make sure of more than anything, and that was to "own" the original windows installation disk. 1) I wanted the option to be able to reformat/reinstall should I ever need to (or want to) and 2) I didn't want my desktop pre-loaded with a lot of free/crap/bloat/trial ware.
So, to cut a long story short, I bought an Asus-based desktop machine with no OS.
I ordered an OEM copy of windows 7, a simple graphics card with HDMI output, a front-fitting card reader and a couple of other bits and bobs. Oh, and it has specialist sound card.
Starting from scratch I fixed it all up in a couple of sessions. There are a few freeware apps on it (anti-virus, disk defragmenter, google chrome, belarc advisor, inSSIDer) and 3 Pro software packages.
The only thing that it doesn't have (over my dead body) is iTunes and I'm very careful when I install CDs that come with things like mobile phones, printers and digital cameras not to accidentally install everything on those disks.

It is very good, no glitches, no hissy-fits, no crashes. Hard-wired to the internet (via powerline adapter) it's comfortably the best PC I use (and I use a few!).

Recommended method......

Cheers guys. These suggestions certainly gve me some great choices and I shall have a look at both
