Par 3's - Tee or no Tee ?

Tee it up for me

Normally most tee boxes are cut a little shorter than fairways so you dont get that 'sat up' lie as you do on the fairway

Tee it up - but not too high. Just - and I mean just - above the turf.
I see so many playing partners teeing up on a 150 yarder with those blue castle tees and wondering why they get a poor strike.

Has to be a tee every time for me. I just feel uncomforatble over the ball if I don't and rarely put a good strike on it if I don't use one. It has to be low though to make sure I strike it properly. It always makes me laugh when you see players use a wooden tee and then peg it up by 2cms or so with a short iron and wonder why its hit the top of the face and gone nowhere

Why though Del?

Surely you have a better chance of a pure strike teeing it up a wee bit

This is a good point for my return i think :) Thanks for all the replies. There's obviously a lot of differing opinions which means there can't be a hard and fast rule.

I personally don't like the feel of a short iron off a tee . Driver/long or mid-iron i'm ok with but a tee shot with a short iron , to me anyways , feels a bit errr...tinny is the best way i can describe it. Perhaps its because a normal short iron on a par 4/5 would be played directly off the turf and thats the feel i'm looking for and used to ?

From a purely technical point of view - and i can't comment on this because my technique isn't that good - would you get the same 'squeeze contact' between ball and turf from a low tee position as you would if it was played directly off the green stuff ?

I think you would, IMO or what i belive is that you hit the equator of the ball not the bottom so it wont matter if its just popped up a little

On a differnt note those little rubber range tee's i cant hit any iron off them too much resistance

A question for all those who have said they prefer not to use a tee on a par 3.....

When you come to your ball on the fairway, would you rather your ball was sat on a bare lie or on a nice juicy bit of turf??

There's five par 3's at my course. I surprised myself when I thought about it, on how differently I approach each hole with regards to club and tee used.

Here's what I do ;

Hole 3, 197 yds, Blue Castle Tee, 5 iron
Hole 4, 138 yds, Orange Castle Tee, PW
Hole 7, 145 yds, Orange Castle Tee, 9 Iron
Hole 12, 150 yds, Red Shortee, ball just off ground, 9 iron
Hole 14, 162 yds, Blue Castle Tee, 7 Iron

Always tee it up - why not improve your lie when allowed to do so?
Golf is a hard enough game to play without making it harder for yourself ;)

Depends on the nice juicy bit of turf, bare lie is fine for me.

Yep, 9 out of 10 I will give myself a preferential lie by teeing it up on a broken tee. Not exactly tee'd up, just a really good lie.

Then thin it.
