Was wondering today what the general consensus is on shortish par 3's as to whether you use a tee peg or not.

For some reason , i have real trouble hitting a short iron ( 8 upwards ) from a tee , even if the tee is set so low that its practically invisible . Probably a psychological thing but never seem to get a clean strike off one.

So , do you use one or not ?

Simple answer is yes & no. I Often use a tee, but sometimes & especially during the summer months on wel kept teeboxes I'll choose to hit off the deck from the tee. Infact I've been known to hit hybrids & my fairway woods off the deck on the tee box too.

That said I Don't have problems hitting short irons from tees on the tee box.

tee peg every time for me !!it guarantees you a god lie every time you tee it up , i also try to focus on striking the back of the ball then the ground whilst keeping the head still long enough to see where the tee its self goes ,

On our par 3 184 yards down hill I peg a 6 iron up to get extra loft, on our par 3 120 yarder I choke down on a PW and hit off the astro turf. It all really depends on conditions and what type of draw/fade I am playing with on the day.

On the tee is about the only chance you'll get to legitimately improve your lie.

Take advantage of it, everytime.

I stand in this corner, unless it's a knockabout and I can't find an old tee lying on the floor. Not going to snap a long driver tee for that. I'll knock up a little hump with the club then sit the ball on top. (Sorry to any greenkeepers but all signs will be removed by the divot that follows :D)

ASTRO TURF? What's that? :D

I use a tee every time. Why get grass caught between clubface and ball if it's not necessary? Even Tiger advocates using a tee everytime.

I tee it up also, got to take all the help available. I normally have it pretty low but a couple of my playing partners tee it up a bit, which looks strange to me.

I totally agree, in fact FYI I also have a beginers golf book in my collection of books written by Jack Nicklaus - who says exactly the same thing. If the great man used a tee everytime, maybe we all should.

I tee it up.
1. Less chance of the dreaded "thin" :D
2. I tend to take a club more than the distance and the ball comes out a tad "weak" but predictable.
Off the turf, I'll either get a powerful "with-divot" shot (which is good and spins) or a thin-ish badly hit one :(

For me, a tee is the percentage shot.

For some reason (probably my lack of talent) I find it easier to square the club (mentally?) when it's teed up. I can even hit right to left ones off a tee, but hardly ever off the ground....???

Depends on what the teeing area is like and what kind of shot I wish to attempt. More often than not, I dont use a tee if I can choose a good lie, after all the majority of iron shots are off the grass so why use someting you rarely need?

I think I have the very same book.
Tee every time for me too
;)

Always no tee.

Less chance of thinning and generally more spin when taking a divot.

Exactly the opposite.....

So what then do you do if you can have a lie that doesnt need improving? :D

tee it up without a doubt!

tee shot is the only time your in full control! keeping the ball a few mm of the deck is paramount for a perfect strike
