over complication ???

if you don't know how it works how can you possibly fix it WHEN it goes wrong?
AND it does go wrong Nikon :( i know ha ), but like alot of other things the more complicated it is the more there is to go wrong.. I dont have the answers mate i was just wondering what other people thought ,

I'm not defending either position, but in reality most of the guys on this forum posting lots of stuff about swings and clubs and balls and whatever are probably doing exactly as you suggest....getting some clubs and going out and playing golf.
Discussing the advantages of XYZ is just random ponderings of the mind, sometimes in the hope of finding something a little different or better (to a small degree) for one's game.

I bought some "extra" irons last year after learning about MOI, COG, MPF, shaft spec, grips (!"£?!) all from questions on here. I also didn't know there was so much variation/choices in shafts and heads....when I first played it was just steel or graphite and graphite was, um, well, a bit dodgy.

So I now have a set which I think suits me well. My Mizunos and 11 degree driver, "tour balls" and ancient fairways RIP in my garden shed. Do I play better with the new stuff..? .. yes. :D

Even if I didn't, I wouldn't regret the chat and discussion and the 8,000 posts...it's just for fun.

I dont go anywhere near posts that start off with some technical question ;)

I'm useless with all this spec stuff and once i've got the clubs i'm happy with then you wont see me changing for donkeys years. You cant buy a game no matter what some people think. It all goes well over my head about shafts, torque, kick points etc etc and thank heavens for that as it would probs bore me rigid

Bladeplayer I cant help think this post was started after you reply to my question in ask the experts!

So in response (and some of this probably has been said before)

I have only just recently take the game up as golf was never my "first sport" and because of this I have no idea what the "basics" are because nobody has taught me. Having coached a sport I know that to play to any sort of level bar being a "natural" requires the basics to be taught no matter how simple.

I also feel that yes I may be able to play the occasional draw shot but im lost if I know how I did it. Now I could spend hours "just hitting balls" and never ever replicate that shot because I do not know the basics or I could be a natural at the game but then change one thing and never hit that draw again (how would I know what to look for with out the basics).

I may ask the odd question that seems stupid or technical but I am the type of person who needs to know what the end result is going to be if the shot is played right otherwise whats the point? I may as well just hit and hope which is what i was doing until my first lesson. Before a lesson I though the bigger the swing the further the ball goes. Turns out the wider the swing the further it goes and it may even also get back on the swing plane!!!!

The basics in my mind are essential to enjoy sport that you play regularly.

No I am not a golfer trying to get to scratch Id be happy with breaking 110 two games in a row but I am golfer who is only just getting the basics.

OK rant over and it wasnt taken personally this is just my opinion

:D

I can sometimes get sucked into all the technical stuff.
I find it interesting tho that most of the low hcp guys on here and the ones you meet generally dont care much for tech talk and the high hcpers( me included) talk about it as if experts, speaks volumes I recon!

All my clubs are second hand from ebay, they don't do custom fit!

I just looked for stiff for my driver, 3 wood, hybrid and Fli-Hi and regular for everything else, just felt that these were okay for my game but don't ask me why.

The three wood shaft is a grafalloy blue and is a right beast.

I agree, but the volumes it speaks presents an interesting discussion. Most guys off low h'cap (unless they are trying for scratch or something) most probably have a good swing, and just seek consistency (through lessons or practise) and short game. The mid guys (like me) are still trying to build a usable swing.
As someone said not too long ago, no point messing about with short game when your long game gets you into huge trouble.

Agree with the OP to a point. However as someone who recently has tried several shafts in a 910, I can certainly see which shaft suits my swing better.

So I have two options. Put in a lot of practice, have lessons, and spend time and money on the range, and change my swing. Or. Use a shaft that just works, as opposed to one that doesn't.

I'll never have a great textbook swing, so why even get frustrated trying to get to the holy grail? Just find the kit that works for you. Which does mean getting a bit techy.

Played last night with a Pro. He was using a 910 with an 'x' flex shaft, full tour spec etc. I couldn't get much distance with it at all. Not surprisingly! So shaft choice does affect distance and direction of the ball. So whilst I have the choice, I might as well find something that suits. And if that makes me 'techy', then, ah well.

Each to their own.
