But poker is competitive, and may yet become an olympic sport. Dancing also (now this is very physical and can be competitive, but is still not a sport). Snooker too, and don't even get me going on fishing being a sport (how can outwitting a fish be sport).

None of the above are sports as far as I am concerned. They may be physical / difficult / competitive / involve training / coaching etc, but are not sports.

Don't know why, just aren't.

I sweat after the first hole nevermind the 18th!!

I wish the wife would buy me a GoKart :(

Go on, get one. Used mine for the first time last weekend, and it's great. It's a lot less than some of those other brands!

I would but my next purchase is going to be the Galvin Green’s Emerson & Enzo trousers and top base layer to wear under my waterproofs & windshirts this winter, I find trousers & waterproofs quite wearing on the legs and awful wet with morning dew (come the jokes about spending too much time in the stew!!)

Two actually, Dai Reece in 1957 and Nick Faldo in 1989.

Personality = Nick Faldo? I think there is a flaw in your arguement J_F.

It is a gentle sport in my book. The fatties Murph has listed above (you missed out the biggest lardass Monty btw!) would be a pretty good argument to say golf isn't a real sport, bit like bowls, darts and snooker.
If someone said to me golf isn't a sport I wouldn't get too bothered. We used to rib our flatmate who was a very good hockey player that hockey wasn't a sport and was actually a game for girls. It drove him mental! Hockey is a physically demanding sport of course, much more so than golf but to me it's still a girls game!
Not sure you can win that argument JuniorC!

Well said - yes a sport but only a gentle one! Take the walking out of golf and you have for an average 80 shot golfer:

1. 30 putts and 10 chip shots consuming less calories than the drink taken at the 9th.
3. 40 wood/iron shots of strenuous activity lasting less than a whole minute.

A friend of mine relies heavily on whether or not you can smoke during a game, to define sport. Yes, easily with golf but probably not a pipe!

I smoke and nearly died played Reddish Vale with Mickeytwodesks on Sunday

The 18th is like the north face of the eiger man it hurt getting up that hill!

You can also smoke playing football if you want it's just not advisable

So yes you need some level of fitness to play because unless you happen to be American walking is a fairly integral part of the game (and llong may it continue)
