options for a custom fit

good news on the bonus front. I will therefore be going for some 'pretties' but the final choice has yet to be made, as has where I go for the fitting.

my proshop can do a static fit on Titleist, Mizzies and Pings. they are good - very good teachers, and their prices for clubs are reasonable.

At the moment the choice is between AP2, CB710 and I15 but there is a wild card MP53 which has been suggested as a possible.

I'm spending a wadge so want to get this right, these will be with me for a good while; so what to do for the best?

Option 1: let the proshop do the fit

Option 2: finalise the club choice with the proshop, then go the manufacturer for the fit but order from the pro.

Option 3: go to The Belfry, finalise the choice there but order from the proshop. If I go here I could also get my driver 'tuned'.

Option 4: go to an independent club builder who uses only custom heads. prices this way are actually better than going to a mainstream manufacturer (3 - GW for less than 4-PW)

I agree with Hapless.

The factory fit is a great experience but when I bought my custom fit clubs just before xmas I got the local pro to do it and bombed out the factory fit Mizuno's as they wern't right for me.

I bought AP2's and would certainly recommend them!

This is a good point.

But, if it were me, I would finalise/shortlist the clubs you want then go direct to the manufacturer for a custom fit and order them through your pro.

I would go for 2. But I would not decide exactly which club to go for, but go with an open mind.

Didn't you have newish clubs when I played with you at CS last year?

What do you hope to achieve by spending a load of money, when the equipment you have may not be the problem.

At the end of the day its your money, What are you expecting to gain from new irons or are you just treating yourself

I changed from my MX17 two years ago and had come down from 24 - 11 and that was my treat. I had gone as far as I could with the GE cavity backs and needed something that would allow me to shape shots and this helped me improve even more.

fair questions patrick,

the clubs I have now were off-the-shelf, (snatched off the shelf tbh as they were priced in a sale when they shouldn't have been). since then they have been bent 2 deg up; the latest check by my teaching pro indicates that that isn't enough but they cannot be bent a second time apparently. also the shafts may be a bit too soft and contributing to too many greens missed left. I've tested a few different clubs with firmer shafts and had far less dispersion so I live in hope that anything else is down to me. a case of getting the right tools.

I also have a possibly, once-only opportunity to treat myself, not just to the clubs but also some lessons with one of GM's Top 25 coaches - he happens to run my proshop! I see these being around a long time.

where would I like to get to? 16 seems fair enough considering my late start but just not in one go!

Go anywhere that has the MP53 and try them, if you love them then get a Mizzy fitter to fit them, if you dont then goto your pro if you feel he can fit those AP2s imo.

Personally I'd go somewhere that offered a range of clubs (Belfry etc) and go there with an open mind and see what they come up with. Worse case scenario you'll have all your swing specs anyway and can still go back to your pro and go with one of the shortlist you already have.

I've been to Titleist and The Belfry, and of those 2 The Belfry were far more thorough.

The only problem is that you lose £50 unless you buy a club(s) from them.

Obviously they have far more choice as well. You could try all the clubs at your pro shop but one head might feel much better than another just because of a different shaft (unless your pro can swap shafts about between clubs?).

For quite a few clubs (my ZBs for instance), 2 degrees is all they can bend them any way. Mine should have been more upright, but Titleist say it can't be done.
