Opinions Needed on Stoke Park

I am planning my 40th which is coming up later in the year. I am a bit of a foodie so part of it is going to be a meal at the Fat Duck as always wanted to go. Ideally I would like to tie this in with something golf related and an overnight stay and want to make it a bit special as I am not having a big party.

Reading GM this month I saw that Stoke Park is only 15 minutes from the Fat Duck so thinking of splashing out on a night there (love the club house from Bond and Layer Cake) and also a round of golf.

Can anyone let me know if the course is worth the green fee and, if possible, how the course holds up in bad weather as it will be a Winter round. Also, any other suggestions on a top course in the area would be appreciated. I am also going to see if I can get a round at Beaconsfied when I am there as it was my dad and grandads old club.
 
Its a fabulous setting but for me the golf course is only alright, nothing particularly special and personally dont think it is worth what they usually charge for a green fee.

Only played there in summer so not sure how it holds up in the winter
 
The Grove? Little bit Premiership footbally but nice enough.. Ashridge is special but a few miles from Beconsfield or Bray (30mins maybe).

I here you can see part of the Slough industrial estate from Stoke Park.
 
Bearwood Lakes might be a better proposition than Stoke Park.
Agree the SP is a bit ho-hum (apart from a few holes), so not really worth the high green fee. BL stands out as approaching the biggies in the area (Wentworth, Sunningdale, Berkshire etc.) but at a reasonable price. Seems pretty good in the Winter too.

I am not hugely impressed with the drainage at Bearwood. Nice summer course though. Frilford Heath Red was a cracking course.

Its not really close to Maidenhead/Beconsfield either there are only 16 holes and I don't think you can play without a member? Still I LOVE the place and would happily play the 16 holes if I was over Surrey way...

It is my understanding that two are being rebuilt this year and its playing 16 at the moments, pretty sure I am correct but there are some members here who will tell us for sure.

I think the re-build was done and they've re-opened. Or are close to being done as Paul (PNWokingham) mentioned he would be playing the re-done 9th for the 1st time a week or so ago.

I'll let you know in a few weeks, as I'm playing down there.

And it's not all that far away from Maidenhead either (15 miles or so). Certainly not when compared to the trip from Rutland (to Bray).

Re-opened, all 18 in play and the redesigned holes are a great enhancement to the course, if you ask me.

Drainage at BL is pretty good. The course rarely closes in winter, although after sustained heavy rain there may be a trolley ban for a few days.

Can you pay and play or get sort of concession or are they strict on members guessed only?

Properly looking forward to it (though not the cost of getting there which, if I don't have a car that weekend may end up being horrendous :()
