On Saturday I am playing in the open comp at Loudoun Gowf Club and next Saturday the open comp at Ballochmyle Golf Club. The entry fees are £10 and £8 resepctively.

I really enjoy these days with the courses in tip top condition and a low cost way of playing other places.

I am aware however that some members of clubs are unhappy that the green staff and greens committee try as hard as they can to have the course in great condition for this day and in their eyes do not try as hard for the rest of the year.

How many others play in open comps and what is your clubs attitude towards these open competition days ?

I try to play in as many opens as I can. They are always excellent value for money and are a good test of your handicap at other courses. Some of them even throw in a bacon butty , lunch and evening meal if youre doing a 36 holer.

I'm surprised more people dont enter them , however there are a lot of courses i'd like to play that dont do mens singles opens and its difficult to play them as a single in the week.

am a member at loudoun and always look forward to the open..your normally put out with people from other courses and with roughly the same handicap which makes it a good game..have to agree with post, our greens are rapid for a day then for some reason greenkeepers dont keep them like that...anyway hope you enjoy ur round tomorrow...

£10 or less for an open lol, must be north of the border!!!!!

I think some clubs use them as a way of advertising their course to potential members hence the effort that goes in.

Our club has them but they dont appear to make any special effort on those days.

I'm playing in my first ever. It's only a mixed open one, but it mean I play as a friends course cheaply and we can have a good laugh at the same time. I've got my eye on one for next year !!!!

I was a member at Loudoun for around 15 years and it was my experience there that sort of prompted the post.
Thanks for the good wishes looking forward to it, are you playing tomorrow ?
There were some members who do not like all the work that appears to go in to the course for one day and feel it could be presented to that standard more often.

I have no problem with making the course look its best for the day as can attract new members or increase the course's reputation. What can frustrate me as a weekend golfer is that the Open events shut the course if you do not enter. This Saturday the course is closed for the womens' open and we have no agreement with other courses to play there. When I can only sometimes fit in one round a week it is frustrating when something like this stops me playing.

I'm playing in 3 rabbits open pairs comps this summer. The price of each one is £30 per pair but the cheapest course normally costs £30 per player. These comps are a great ay to play oter courses at roughly half the normal price.

I agree with the whole closing the course bit, this week our course was closed 1000-1500 on weds for county captains comp, closed 1000-1600 Thursday for seniors comp and then Saturday is captains day. Next week is knackered for a couple of days too! When are you actually supposed to be able to play! Also our open is £12.50 each which I think is a bit of a vim for members I believe it should be at least half that.
