Does anyone know of clubs in London/Surrey who have competitions from time to time open to members of other clubs? I have found a website called opengolfclubcompetitions but there doesn't seem to be much/regularly on there in the way of singles events (heaps of 4BBB etc though). I know that to an extent it goes against the members to allow others into their comps but it also improves the prize kitty.

Do any of you play in other clubs comps regularly? My course only has formal weekend comps once a month or so and I am keen to get a bit of variety/more regular practice under comp conditions (I too often turn social rounds into experimentation and don't focus on scoring under pressure).

Cheers

Ever looked at this site www.golfempire.co.uk ?

Thanks General - that expands the pool a bit. I had seen that site but forgot about it (although a number of the comps on there are restricted to low handicaps, but some do sound good). Beggars can't be choosers but what I am also after is just some general Saturday/Sunday club competitions where visitors are welcome - I assume that there will be courses out there who do this.

I would think it would be unlikely that clubs would allow visitors to their weekend comps, might upset the members somewhat. Not in Surrey (quite) but East Berks is doing a 36 hole medal on Sept 12th which I have entered. H'cap limit is 12.

This is my first Open ever and I'm wondering if a 36 hole medal is the best place to start but I figure I've got nothing to lose.

There are a few of these sites, try singlefiguregolfer.co.uk and also worth checking the various county sites as well to what they have in their order of merit. I know there are plenty of events on the Surrey site.

This year I have decided not to play in any club events, I'm just going to concentrate on opens. Got about 12 36holers lined up so far this year.

Cheers guys - Surrey county site has a lot of good ones. Haven't played any of the courses yet so expect I'll have some big numbers but will give them a crack.

there are a lot of good ones for your handicap range - most around this time of year.

Clandon Regis is holding it's first this year on a Sunday in the middle of July - entries are still open

West Surrey's Woolpack is this weekend (entries closed)

This is a good starting point for you - some will have lower limits than 7 but many are 8

Not much help to you, but the open comp is a staple up here.

Pretty much every club has an open of some sort thoughout the season.

Some even have 3 or more. I could pretty much play in an open every weekend if i wanted. in fact 2 years ago i went from 13 handicap to 8 just from opens.

I find it strange that you don't have them down there!!

Likewise Patrick. They were commonplace in Australia because the clubs saw them as a good way to attract green fees to their courses. They also had a good variety of formats (par, stableford) as opposed to 36 hole medal which mainly what I can find in Surrey which means potentially getting eaten alive on a course a non-member is completely unfamiliar with.

The grove run a back to black comp about half a dozen times during the year open to all but recommended max 18 as its off black tees and course set up same as WGC few years back.

from that result it is obviously an awesome test, i quite fancy having a go but still trying to convince HID that a weekend break down south is a good idea!
