Regular forum members know where this story is going now. The cententary medal and despite the forecast we played in warm and sunny conditions. Off to a flyer and level par (gross after 4). Silly dropped shot at 5 (took too much club laying up and found a bunker and caught it too clean and saile dthe green). Another dropped shot at 7 (SI2) and out in 37 (=2) gross.

Silly dropped shot at 10 (horrid fatted approach) and at 11 (missed the par 3 right into a bunker). Made a streaky par at 12 with a lucky drive just getting through the trees at the dog leg, a hooked 7 iron a thinned pitch and run that slowed in the wet grass to 8 feet and holed the putt. Dropped a shot at 13 and then went par, par to stand on the 16th only +5 gross.

You may remember from Ooops part II that in a midweek medal I arrived at this stage +7 and finished 6, 6, 6 ((dropping 6 shots in 3 holes). I was desperate to avoid the same mistake. Slowed my breathing, aimed well away from the OB left and procceded to make a carved snap hook left anyway. My 2nd drive went long and true (doh) but I missed the green left and hit a 6/10 chip but holed from 12 feet for a double.

I was going to hit a hybrid down 17 and take a bogey 4 but in the end decided to stick with my plan and hit 3 wood. It started right and drew and looked like it would end up front left but kept running towards OB. When we got there it was really close and I thought it was just in. My partners weren't sure and we waved the group behind through and they came over and were sure it was out too. Played my other ball and made 6. Can you see a pattern yet.

Took 3 wood to take the OB right out of play if I sliced one and also the ditch at about 220. Hit a good drive especially given what had gone before and had a 5 wood to leave a chip in. Came way over it and pulled it left and it hit a tree and ended up on the fairway about 200 yards away. With a pond right and a left to right wind I wasn't going to be a hero so hit 5 iron and then a chip on and two putted for another 6. I finshed with a net 68 (-2 nett) but how costly are these last three holes?

Before anyone says you talekd yourself into it, I was trying really hard to just focus on making a good swing on each shot and to be honest the thought of repeating the midweek medal fiasco only occured to me as we were waiting for a decision on 17.

I think there was a nett 67 in as well so looks like I'll have to hope for a 2nd or 3rd finish, a few quid in vouchers and a few OOM points. Not a happy camper - AGAIN!

A couple under nett seems ok to me. Well done.

There's always good and bad luck in a game and I guess it's hard to choose when it's going to strike.

I've had a few problems with OOB recently.....the worst one was on the second when I missed the green left by about a foot and went 90 degrees straight off the course. If I'd missed it 3 foot left, it wouldn't have kicked where it did....that's golf.

If I may be critical, If I had a good score going and made it to your 17th, I'd club down and do anything to avoid the trouble. We had a nasty 17th at my old club; I always took a 5 wood. If I was looking at an under-par nett score with two bogeys on the last two, I'd tee off with a 4i and leave it short of the bunkers and the OOB off the right.
The amount of times I peached it dead straight, left it 10 yards short then chipped it stone dead is quite amazing.
Same down the last (350 yarder). Everyone took drivers (looking for the last hole glory) and I'd just try and hit the "same" 4 iron as the 17th. Then club down to come up short again. Negative? maybe, but better to chip on from a few yards short than mess with the deep bunkers.

Dave

I think the frustrating thing with the 17th is as you know the OB is literally yards from green and my normal shape is right to left. I'm more annoyed I'd pulled the hybrid to lay up short and chip and 2 putt and get out of there and then hit the 3 wood to try and make the green. Poor course management I guess.

Homer, Homer, Homer.......what are you like? lol

Your time will come fella, very soon too I would imagine if you continue shooting like that.

I feel your pain fella, I really do :(

Just a thought.

Do you still keep to the same gameplan over these 3 holes?

IE using the same clubs.

Would it be worth totally changing the thought process pre shot ? Rather than teeing off with a driver or 3 wood, What would a 5 wood leave you with ? Or maybe just gripping down a little on the club, and using a 3/4 swing instead, just to keep it in play ?

What happens if you play the last 3 holes as a par 5, 4, 5 ?

Not as a permanent change of gameplan of course, but just to break the spell these holes seem to have over you at the moment.

Like I say, just a thought.

This sort of "bogey" hole complex is very familiar to me. My old club has a par 5 with OB all the way up the right and the wind blows left to right. A pond and some mounds tighten it all up and to start there's an intimidating carry to find the short stuff.
I played this hole in anything from 4 to 11 shots. I had a spate of taking at least 8 - for about a 6 week period last summer. I got it into my head that the hole was out to get me. So I changed tack. Instead of 3 wood off the tee I hit a hybrid. Kept the ball in play. Instead of a 5 wood next I hit the 3 wood and put the ball close to my normal point. Then a wedge on and 2 putta and all of a sudden its an easy hole. I've even taken a 6 iron off this tee before.

Moral of the story is to mix it up - I know its a par 3 (your 17th) but maybe try to get close to the green and see if you can chip'n'putt rahter than going for the pin and drawing it OB.

Doubles, while not nice, are going to happen. But keeping that triple off has got to help. next time take the hybrid!

Hi Homer, well done on shooting 2 under but commiserations on the last 3 holes. It's something we all go through at some point unfortunately.
My pro gave me a tip to get all the negatives out of my head. Even when you think positively there are sometimes still nagging doubts in the back of your mind.
Go through your pre shot routine as normal but just before you take the club back say "TARGET" really loud in your head, it clears you mind of any thoughts about OB & previous rounds ad gets the picture of where you want the ball to finish. It's worth a try even if it's not for you.
Good luck in your next competition, I'm sure it will all click soon enough.

Homer

Your experience is almost identical to mine yesterday.

Standing on the 17th tee, I am only 10 shots over with a handicap of 16. So, two more pars and I finish net 64. These are holes that I can par on a normal day !!

Of course it did not happen that way, I triple bogeyed the 17th and bogeyed the 18th, thus finishing net 68.

I'd have taken that before the round, but afterwards is a different story, whereupon I became bitter and twisted !!

Still, handicap cut to 15 which is getting towards my 12 target this year.
