Online betting ads are making Sky's golf coverage misery

To be honest the golf was so good the adverts were a hinderance and I merely used them to top up the tea pot and crack open the biscuits and ignored them completely. Mind you I ignore them anyway and am a real channel hopper in any commercial break, not just sport. Drives the wife nuts (another unexpected bonus)

Can't stand the betting ads and their bonhomie - when so many struggle - but I can't change that. So when ads come on I oft hit the live pause on my Sky box - then wait a few minutes and hit the SKy button and back live - having missed the ads,

As far as I can see, all Sky do for golf is to take the TV feed from foreign broadcasters and provide a team of talking heads to fill in over the local commercial breaks. Then they charge their subscribers and advertisers a fortune to access this rubbish!

Im looking forward to watching some of the coverage of the made in Denmark open this week, and the Wyndham this week. I wonder what time it will be on the BBC or ITV? Channel 4? Channel 5? There must at least be some sort of highlights package?

Save four days a year and a handful of highlight programs for the BMW, Sky are the only company keeping the sport on TV and relevant. Thats why they do wonders for the sport.

I don't have SKY but on my Humax Freesat box there is the facility to watch while you record. So if there's something on a commercial channel I want to watch I initiate recording as the programme begins, have a cuppa and wait for 5 minutes and then press play. From then on I can fast forward through the ads - problem solved.

It's not cheap to do that though
Much cheaper than the BBC providing all the cameras, outside broadcast equipment and commentators though! And up to now we have had all that thrown in with the quite reasonable cost of a TV Licence. And no online betting adverts either!

Is that true? Do the BBC not sell the coverage to overseas broadcasters therefore negating the cost? Or as a minimum share the cost of production?

Yes they do, which makes it all the better value for us TV golf watchers! And still no ads! :)

I'd rather not have ads, but I think I'll be able to cope with 4 minutes per hour with no break longer than 60 seconds during the Open.

It's also difficult to criticise Sky for their coverage of the non-major events, which as you say are mostly just the US channel's commentary with a few bits and pieces from the Sky studio, as without Sky showing it, it wouldn't be possible to watch it at all.

Sky spend more broadcasting golf than the BBC do - by a considerable margin

You could watch them for free until Sky managed to close down most of the Pirate sports websites! :(

Only read the first page and seriously get a grip of yourself.

Its not the adverts making you bet its you yourself. Do you watch the adverts about Dyson and suddenly hoover the living room? Sky do wonders for Golf, the BBC gave up on it. End of story.

You realise that despite the adverts you had to sign up, agree to the terms, enter your details? Did the adverts force you to do it? No they didnt. You are responsible for your own actions.

I am sick to death of PC Britain

Very very good point.

Both of these comments, if offered in all seriousness, have given me quite the biggest laugh I've had on here since joining.

The statements in my OP may not necessarily be true and could possibly have been made in the name of humour and sarcasm.

Despite my best intentions Sky's relentless bludgeoning of my senses with its scummy, grubby, sickeningly disingenuous online betting ads sees me now reduced to betting my house, my car, my kids and wife against Wayne Rooney stubbing his left big toe in the 57th minute of Man Utd's next Premiership fixture.

I had, until now, managed not to get drawn in despite all the £30 free bet offers for a year or more, but then in a moment of weakness I finally succumbed yesterday evening.

Am I betting responsibly or has the fun stopped rather too quickly?

Come on Wayne. Don't let me down son...
