One for the low guys

Soon as you reach single figures in my opinion. For example i played on Saturday in a junior medal and i said to myself on the 1st tee 'your playing for scratch not nett' and im glad i did as a nett 59 (fifty nine) :)

Back in the day when I was off 3 at my old club then the gross prize was the target. Anything nett was just a bonus. Nowadays at my present club they dont have a gross category :( cos theyre not interested in having better golfers at the club. This is one of the many reasons i'm moving on to pastures new.

Off my h/c i'm not good enough to win gross prizes in the opens and not high enough to really get a great nett score either :( , tough h/c to be on imo

But, because they've got as far down as their talent allows, will never win the handicap stuff either

Surely if the handicap system worked, these many players could still win net comps if they played to or just under their h/caps.It is supposed to be a level playing field after all.

The point of my thread is that if the handicap system worked well, then everyone would stand a chance of winning the net medals, especially their own respective division (if they have any).

No, no, and thrice no.

Medals are won by improving golfers, not by steady Eddies.

You get your chance when you are on your way down, but at some point you level out. ( For me in the 90s it was 13 ). Once I'd reached that point, my PB off the whites was 10 over par. So I'm going to be, at best, -3 for the round.

Which wasn't, and isn't, ever going to win owt in a medal.

I've not played with too many forumers, but whilst guys like Smiffy and Leftie are blimmin good at their handicap levels, they aren't likely to win much scratch against cat 1 players ( No disrespect if either of you have recently hit a score of sub 70 :o )

They are hugely competitive off their handicaps, but maths say that if they are playing in a medal with 70 other guys, then STATISTICALLY there is a great chance that several of those 70 will hit massively under their handicap.

So ( for example ) Smiffy's net 69 ( say ), whilst still being brilliant, isn't going to show up much in the Richter Scale of handicap movement.

So in reality, it's you guys who play off 5 or less that still have something to play for.

Poor old dears. :p

How very true. I won our medal on Saturday with a Net 67, 2nd and 3rd were Net 68 (off 5) and Net 69 (Off 7). I don't expect to win anything once I get to my single figure target, but then I'm not playing to win anyway and as I said before, I swap winning with shooting the lowest gross score.
