Olympic Golf - Success

Maybe, but going on viewing figures alone, it exposed Golf to Countries and in numbers no other Golf event was ever likely to do, who knows if some kid sees it as a chance to one day represent his Country at an Olympics.

Oh, there will be some that will take to the game - that's a no-brainer, it's numbers that will make it a success or not.
How many new participants will be needed to call it such...?
No idea....

Totally agree Tony, but the funding comment and the 4 Mil per medal is hindsight, we speculate with the funding 4 years in advance and putting it in cost per medal is unfair, a lot of that money goes on infrastructure etc and will be place for years.
How do we judge the 4 x 400m Mens Relay team, a track judge made a call and they're DQ'd.

In regards the funding GB hockey - I believe it's around 16 million for the 4 years spread across around 90-100 people and will also include all the travel costs and facilities

Some of them will still have to pay their own club subscriptions and match day money when they play for the clubs , some will get around £20 grand a year to help them be a full time athlete

It will be the same in other sports - they don't become millionaires - they have enough to live on whilst they train every day or travel to play comps all over the place.

If these athletes don't get funded then thousands of talented people won't be able to show of their talents on the biggest Stage and we go back to only the rich being able to be full time athletes and GB getting one gold and a couple others.

The money given isn't "astronomical" when compared to other sports with football being the perfect example

I totally agree with helping to fund our Athletes but your a bit off the mark with what some are paid, according to the UK Sport link it varied from 14k to over 50K depending on the individual. That's a great wage for those getting the most.
I would doubt any Hockey player is paid that much.
Not sure what the ratio of participants to funding is, but the Football money doesn't fund an Olympic team.

I think with the information available (so far) its been a huge success

The only negatives being voiced (& rightly so) is the topic of pace of play and the occasional persisting reference to the stay-aways in the men's event (thanks again guys) and commentators inexperienced at covering golf (but that last one is from people already playing the game)

Attendances, quality of play, course, viewing figures, general press & media coverage are all being given good report cards (I even read that more folks in Sweden watched the dual with Rose than watched The Open dual!)

If you didn't watch it then I wholeheartedly agree that you will have found a lack of drama and excitement (I can relate to this as the womens hockey was devoid of any drama or excitement as I didn't watch it) but if you did see the golf and still cant find a relative amount of drama or excitement in a missed short putt or a hole in one (whether it happens on the 1st hole on day one or the 72nd hole) there's not really much hope of convincing you that it was there

None of the Olympic events reached their peak dramatic levels until latter stages. Who found Bolts 200m gold race lacking in excitement (not in achievement) I did and I watched it live, it was so much a foregone conclusion that it lacked any real drama

And any suggestion that to be deemed a success golf would have had to attain journalists picks as their favourite moment from the whole Olympics is setting the bar a little high I think (not many sports would make Tokyo on that basis)

Cannot take a single moment away from the medal winners, they worked hard for it.

I still think golf should only be included in a very shorterned version. Come up with a good, even unique format and it might be a success.

I enjoyed the golf, but at the end of the day it was just another 4-day strokeplay tournament for both the men and ladies. Perhaps a 2 day strokeplay qualifying competition with the top 16 going into Matchplay would be better.

That's simply down to your mindset & can't be blamed on the golf. Do you treat club champs weekend as just another 18/36 hole medal at the club. Changing the scoring format wont help you attach any more importance or significance to it

Should we have an 80m instead of the 100m or a half marathon instead of a full etc, so why change the format of Golf that proves who the worthy winner is, how many times have the clubhouse leader after 18 or 36 holes in a Major gone on to win the event?
It wasn't 72 holes squashed in or at the expense of something else, in Japan few top Golfers will have excuses not to turn up and to me this will only improve the Golf, your Countries best playing each other.

Can't see how the excitement would change at all having a matchplay. If anything watching matchplay with only two people on the course is boring, and would be quickly swapped out of tv schedules.

Personally I think so many people remember the last week of winners, and so the early medals get lost. The hockey girls were wonderful but would we have had the same reactions if it was 2.30am on a Wednesday night in the first week?

From reading the article, being a bit cruel, you could argue that all it says is that golf insiders with a vested interest in ensuring the golf continues have claimed the event was a success. And that is reached a big audience down to the fact that it was in the Olympics. As for 10 million witnessing Rose receive his gold then really? What does that actually mean? Are they trying to say 10 million Brits specifically tuned into the golf tournament to watch it? Or more likely that 10 million people happened to be watching the BBCs Olympic coverage on BBC1 anyway at the time they broadcast 2 minutes of the medal ceremony.

It was great to see Rose win it as he was so into it and a vocal supporter, so best to luck to him and he deserves everything he gets out of it. Also on the final day the crowds were good. I know someone who was out there and he's told me that the tickets for the golf were actually about the cheapest you could buy for any Olympic sport which did help boost the numbers , plus many thought they were buying tickets to see the worlds best such as Rory, Speith etc etc. But fair play, they did turn up on the final day (and it is kind of ironic that golf is seen as the most accessible sport, but hey ho, we'll take that)

But again I can not believe that people watching it were excited and thrilled in any way shape or form. The Olympics is mostly full of sports in which there are knockout rounds, short matches, bouts, games where there is a winner that progresses and a loser that goes out. You can tune in and pretty quickly get an idea of what is going on, get engaged in it. I watched Whitlock do his routine (along with several other competitors), get a score which others were trying to beat that built up the tension, win gold, get his medal, do another routine, get a score which beat all those that went before him, win gold and get a medal in the same time that the ladies had probably completed 9 holes at best of the 72 they were playing.

Yes this is not a problem specific to Olympic golf, but I feel when you are trying to sell your sport to the world to encourage people to play, and you are part of the Olympics, then you should look at how all other Olympic sports work and tailor it to that so it feels like it belongs there. I am sure a lot of golf insiders thought it was a big success as it was the same old dull format they are so used to. But I really question if that format actually does the game any favours when it comes to being part of the Olympics.

Personally I think those that would have watched it if it had happened at 2.30am in the 1st week would have had exactly the same reaction. Yes the numbers watching it would have been down purely due to the time, but it was thrilling and engaging sport with some great stories and great performances, no matter what time it was on. To me Adam Peaty probably gave the best individual performance of all GB gold winners in terms of dominance, and he was the 1st one I think.

I agree, was the 100m just another 100m race? Was the marathon just another marathon?

It's the Olympic Golf tournament - the aim is to find the Olympic champion. What's wrong with using the established method of finding champion golfers? Why do people want to add some kind of novelty element. That just demeans the sport. It isn't about promoting golf. It's about finding someone worthy of a gold medal who can stand next to any other gold medal winner in any other sport on equal terms.

Olympic golf was a very good spectacle with pride seen from all competitors and worthy winners (shame on the high profile no shows, however - pathetic). Can it be better? Yes. Two days stroke play, halfway cut and into match play. Next.

Whether Golf is the success the article claims only time will tell, what I don't understand is people wanting to change the format etc, Sailing......hours and days of competition,
Football/Rugby7's/Hockey........group stages then knockout,
Swimming.......days and days of different distances.
MODERN Pentathlon.......invented in the 20's and not evolved since
None of these change the format for the Olympics,

Well actually hockey did http://www.fih.ch/news/fih-announces-format-change-set-to-improve-hockey-experience/

Every single sport I watched at the Olympics was the "same old dull format". Athletics - people just running round a track, jumping or throwing things. Football - 90 mins with 11 a side - same old same old. As for the marathon not even any fancy dress outfits!! Don't even get me stated on swimming - no different to every other swimming event since I watched Mark Spitz in 1972. Yawn. Yawn. :D

Doesn't mean the format couldn't be improved though.
Sailing is a good example.
Slow, useless as a spectator sport, goes on for ever and you can win before the end..but does anyone care?
One wonders why it's still in the Games at all...if GB weren't winning medals in it there would be no interest at all - much like weightlifting...
Most other sports there's a winner and a loser in a shortish space of time - winner moves on...
If they want to have group stages in the golf then it might work..
8 groups of 8 playing matchplay, round robin....to p 2 from each group go on to a 2 round stroke play final...something like that...

Happy for any existing 18 hole format,
