Olympic Golf - Success

How about the top ladies all went, people watched the event and the scoring good so quality golf played. Does that work

So the same as most of the US events then ?

Did it become the pinnacle of the game for the Ladies ?

Surely the success of a sport introduced into the Olympics is what happens next ? Does it inspire people to take up the game - does it trigger people to return to the game.

Your way of thinking As a measurement gauge for success requires a timeframe of minimum I would say 4 years ie next olympics. In 2 days I don't see apart from what I said previous how you can possibly define success.

The final day was a sell-out, so that was a good sign.

I cannot deny that Miss Park deserved her gold medal and is one heck of a golfer. However, I would have liked to see a sign of character rather than a somewhat robotic persona.

So the boss of the Ladies European Golf Tour has said it was a success golf being in the Olympics ?

What measurement was used to judge "succes"

But it was live golf shown to the masses on the Bbc,surely were going to get an influx of youngsters now taking up the game.🤔

Perhaps that is her character

Exactly you can't right now define the success of the inclusion until the affects are felt

More people will watch it because it's on free to air around the world so all the golfers will have watched it - people only interested in golf will watch it and nothing else. Got to hope that people will pick up the game but when you consider the comments about the pace of play and lack of real drama and excitement compared to all the other sports then it's going to struggle to grab that non golfer

For most it just seemed like another golf event ( 72 holes stroke play ) hence why I didn't watch it

That's why for me it needs to be something different from another golf event - mixed matchplay KO of some variety

If it was a sell out then that for me is in itself a success, coz most of the stadiums have been half empty even for the finals.

Mixed is a great idea or two to a team over 3 or 4 days, greensomes, foursomes, medal and winners are best from all the formats combined

But surely it's the other way round?

The "most" are actually people who don't play golf or at best very rarely, they would have seen something they weren't familiar with and might be inspired to take it up. This is what the Olympics Committee will be hoping.

The "few" will be keen golfers who are happy to pay money to see too much 72 hole stroke play golf and hence are uninspired by it.

Not sure if you read the article? But these 2 paragraphs alone make it success for me

"It has surely become harder for people within the game to argue against its inclusion. Players have enjoyed levels of global exposure far greater than their traditional tournaments have ever achieved.

Now, for those who run the game, comes the appetising challenge of securing golf's Olympic status and harnessing a legacy of growth for all levels of the sport."

Add to that the 10 Million that saw Rose get his medal, more people watched womens golf on a world-wide stage than ever before and you want to argue it's not been a success!

Do you think more non golfers watched the Golf at the Olympics or was the majority who watched it already golf fans ?

I believe the majority who watched the golf will already be golf fans so most will have seen the format being played IMO

Do you think the same principles applied to the Womens Hockey?

The Olympics is a special case. People who don't normally watch sport at all will watch sports that they would normally have little or no idea about or interest in.
And don't forget that this is a world wide audience, so yes, I definitely think that more non golfers watched the golf than golfers, a lot more.

In hockey the Olympics is the pinnacle of the sport - it was watched by hockey players new and old because the game is very rarely on telly and at such a high level.

Yes more hockey players than non hockey players watched the hockey final ( believe over 8 million watched the final ) and after 2012 it helped increase the numbers of ladies who played.

Its like any sport success breeds success and long may it continue in whatever sport it is.

You only have to look at Cycling,Rowing and Tennis to see this is right.

Lesser sports will come and go like they always have but its up to the powers in the sport to keep pushing.

I read somewhere that it has cost us British 4 million per medal.

The trouble is if the money dries up and we as a nation cant sustain the costs.

I also heard the head of the mens and womens paddle team say that they all went to Brazil 3 times for training from 2012 to Rio that is one helluve outlay for a minority sport.

If the money does diminish we could easily become a minority nation quite easily.
