"Old" technology that still blows you away ?

Computers for me

Was thinking this too. I've worked with them since 1981, and remember fondly the first one I worked on, was the size of a phone box. The first hard disk installed inside it was so heavy it took two of us to lift it in, if it was fully extended on it's rails, it could tip the system over......and it was only 5MB. To think that you have more capability in your mobile phone now still astounds me. iPod/ iPhone - my phone now contains pretty much my whole CD collection, accesses the internet, shows Sky Sports, plays movies and TV - I mean really, how bloody cool is that? Not to mention "facetime" did my first call via it last night, how amazing is that. Made me think back to the days of yore, watching the likes of Star Trek and thinking we'd never have technology like that.....

Many of the others also listed here, sky+ for those of us that remember VCR. The internet, specifically broadband.....streaming films from the internet via your blu-ray player or TV. Wireless/ bluetooth connectivity. email - where would we be without it now - and how much does it save.....

Never really put myself as a techno geek, but the advances in the last 30 years or so have been amazing to say the least.

That's cheating. Having an aeroplane stuck on a pole isn't real flying! I suppose when you are in the southern hemisphere flying is easy because gravity works the other way than in the North.

As smiffy says , telly or the origional phone , golf been played in America & you are watching it at same time live in your house thousands of miles away.. cool ,or the old phone, talk into a black contraption your words travelled down wire & came out the same way you said it immediatly but miles away . also agree with the first planes & engines , after that it was only modification , to actualy invent any of these , wow ..

I guess stuff like phones, the Internet and tv are all stuff I take for granted as they were already around and established when I was born. Whilst its not exactly old, I think I would be lost without my iPad, I find it truly amazing, and although a computer is something I use almost every day and is now essential for stuff such as my schoolwork I find my iPad so much more convenient. I guess also Facebook, makes keeping in contact with friends and organising stuff so simple

the fax machine. how do they get someone in the machine that wrietes exactly how I do? Will wonders ever cease?

That reminds me of the time I asked someone to fax me a copy of a drawing at work, he said "okay but make sure you fax it straight back to me, it's the only copy I've got"

Old but great technology for me is electricity, we rely on it for so much these days.
