Old ball flight laws used by world no 1

This latest masterclass by Master Luke has him pointing the clubface at the target then aiming left and cutting across it for a fade.

Luke states he ALWAYS plays a fade or draw and never a straight shot into a green so surely there must be something in what he says or is he actually not doing something he thinks he's doing?

I have so much respect for him and any pro and feel almost embarrassed questioning these golfing gods so I'm not going to, I'm just highlighting this for discussion or enjoyment of the master at work.

the recent ball flight discussions have confused me no end, and i don't even try to move the ball myself. from what i have gathered pointing the club face at the "target" makes the ball start at "target", and aiming left means that technically he is fading the fall from "target" to "right of target" - but actually he is doing something else in reality and actually aiming the clubface further left than he thinks???

Yep! Thousands of balls have grooved some sort of adjustment into his sub-conscious golf brain!

Played yesterday and had 1 instance where I had to hit a Draw around a tree (nd avoid a pond on right!). Played as per New (for US) but 1966/68 (for UK) and got nice gentle Draw. US 'Law' shot would have hit the bleeding tree! The fact that I duffed the chip was made up for by a 20ft putt!

The saving grace on this example was that he had a right-to-left wind which would stop the ball fading off to the right.

His example is technically wrong for 'normal conditions' and in reality he's not really doing what he says/thinks he's doing.... eg he's not cutting across the ball as much as he intends and/orthe face is a fraction more closed at impact.

yes I think thats right, first divot certainly looks left.
I wonder if theres any vids of Luke instructing on fading/drawing round obstacles?

Why? Nicklaus's book was junk, so was faldo's, why would Donald be any different? just because you can play a bit doesn't mean you have a clue about how it works. That's why you have a coach.

Aim the face at the target, aim your feet hips and shoulder left and swing along the line, ball will fade as per what LD suggests, no problems. He is saying exactly as I've been told, shown and read about for years.

Look at the flag, the 'wind' is a gentle puff

yes I think thats right, first divot certainly looks left.

Well folks can say he is wrong all you want but he hs world number 1 coining 10+ million last year, no disrespect but I will listen to him over one saying what he is doing is not right. I would happily hit it 'wrong' to play like he does.

If you want to hit it round a tree, if you aim the club face at the tree, you'll hit the tree. Every time. That's all you need to know.
If you want to miss the tree, point the club face some where else.

I always think that it is funny how just because someone is a top golfer means he knows everything about the game. So you want to know how a Maclaren F1 car works.......who do you ask? Button & Hamilton because they drive they are world champion drivers....or do you ask the Chief Engineer? Just because you know how to do something at the top level, does not necessarily mean you know exactly how it works.

I think Luke Donald knows how to shape the ball but not necessarily how to build a club.

High speed cameras have proved that the ball starts pretty much on the line the club is pointing, and moves in the air dependant on where the swing path is in relation to the face.

He thinks it's what he's doing, but he can't be. If the face really was lined up at the target at impact the ball would start there and then move away from it.
