Been waiting over a week now for my Mizuno fitting in whizz-bang cNational centre.

Been out a few times in the last 2 weeks and shot some pretty decent scores (about 8-9 under my handicap).

At the range my ball striking has been good and pretty consistant after tweeking my swing with some lessons over the long winter.

Got to the centre early for the fitting and hit a few balls to warm up.

Got into the fitting bay and ....... coundn't hit a bloody thing. Thins, tops, slap fades, power slices....the array of unintentional shot making was quiet spectacular!

The Pro doing the fitting couldn't have been nicer and all credit to him said i was playing like a diddy! He suggested i come back in a few months and not waste money at the moment...

Anyone else turned into a golfing retard in this situation or is it just me?

I had a similar scenario last year. I had my heart set on the TM TP's. I was hitting pretty well with the Tour Burners but had decided the TP's were what I needed to get to single figures. Got to the range to hit a small bucket to be nice and loose and even my Burners were mis-firing. When I tried the TP's out I must have looked a numpty as I hit bad shot after bad shot.

Strange how 8 months later I'm finally hitting them really well after taking a punt (well at the price it was no gamble at all really) and they are much better than the R9's they've replaced. Go away and don't beat yourself up about it but put it down to nerves and trying too hard. When you go back, relax and enjoy it. Mind you with the scores you're currently shooting I tend to agree there is little need to swap

A "cut 'n pasted" post I made on the Golf Magic site about 4 or 5 days ago...

"If you have a repetitive swing, one that can hold up no matter what, then I think you can benefit from custom fitting. But for a "game improver" or a higher handicapped golfer I don't think it's of much use at all.
If you asked a good golfer, and by that I mean a very low handicapper or a "pro" to put 10 swings down on a ball, he (or she) would most probably have 10 swings that were very similar. Me? I could put down 10 swings and I doubt very much whether two of them would be alike. If that weren't the case, how come I can top one with one swing, fat one with another and am just as capable of shanking one every now and then. Hardly the basis for a contructive assesment of my capabilities. My swing can vary from one hole to the next.
I have mentioned before that when I went for my custom fitting at Mizuno I was swinging crap. Total and utter crap. Maybe it was because I was being forced to hit the ball off of mats...which I can't stand. Maybe it was because I was conscious of being watched.
But the fitter didn't say anything. Maybe he was being kind. And I got measured for the crap swing I was putting out that day. And have been playing with those clubs ever since.Who says they are right for me?

I can guarantee that if I had been measured hitting the ball off of grass, the figures that both myself and the fitter would have seen would have been totally different. And so, maybe, would have been his recommendations".

I would add to this that if you are unusually tall or short, custom fitting would be of benefit to you as you can get a good idea of the length of shaft that you need and could shorten or lengthen it to suit.

I don't really buy into the CF crap, I checked Pings webfit and thats all I intend doing and then I am buying online to save cash and getting standard shafts.

Thing is, I checked Pings webfit and it was telling me I needed to order my clubs 2 degrees upright. Bearing in mind my Mizzies were 1 degree flat I didn't hold much sway in what it was telling me! Ping will adjust clubs quite happily after purchase so on the suggestion of my club pro I just ordered the clubs as "regular" everything with the option of returning once I had got used to them to have them adjusted if necessary (free of charge of course). And as for prices...my pro matched the best deal I saw online. I bought from him 'cos I will feel much happier going back to him should anything go pear shaped...

Fortunately at my Mizzy fitting I was swinging well. The 3 swings with the shaft optimizer gizmo all showed 84mph clubhead speed and the launch Monitor stats showed every swing to be within a couple of that.
So I'm optimistic that when they come the MP58's are going to be right and I'll hit them well.
For the most part I agree with Smiffy's post above. The Ping numbers were the same for me. How the 2 fits could be 3 1/4 degrees different in my case when the difference between standard lies is 1/2 degree is unfathomable to me. Just looking at the online web-fit is only going to give you a guide. If your fitter is on the ball he'll make any changes that are needed. I don't think mine did.

Your fitting is only as good as your fitter!!

Quite happy with my fitting at Titleist. The main thing for me was to get the correct shaft flex. And to discover that I can't hit project X at all. No way. Mine are 2 degrees upright, plus 1/2", which is more comfortable, but I could and did play standard set up.
For me, a junk swing and my sunday best swing probably have the same club head speed, and so the shaft selection still remains true.
