Off the tee

Driver x 12
Hybrid x 2
6 iron x 1
7 iron x 1
8 iron x 2

If the driver is being naughty then I would go to my hybrid. If both are being badly behaved then my go to, Mr Reliable club is my 7 iron.

Driver at every opportunity! Have added lengths (rounded to nearest 5) as think this allows more comparison among h/caps....

Current h/cap 14

par 5, 550yards Driver
par 4, 270yards 3H
par 4, 440yards Driver
par 4, 330yards Driver (leaking right is fine so for my miss no real trouble)
par 3, 150yards 7i
par 4, 300yards Driver (all hugely uphill)
par 5, 540 yards Driver
par 4, 450 yards Driver
par 3, 126 yards PW
par 5, 560 yards Driver
par 4, 250 yards 5i
par 4, 460 yards Driver
par 4, 340 yards Driver
par 3, 180 yards 5i
par 3, 155 yards 3h (plays so far uphill the top of my ball flight is just above the green!)
par 5, 530 yards, Driver
par 5, 480 yards, Driver
par 3, 118 yards, PW

it depends of which way the wind is blowing.

Westerly driver on all but par 3's and 8/9 and 17.

if its and easterly
i would only use driver on 7th on the front nine, then all but the two par 3;s on the back 9.

To be honest unless you knew the course, hole lengths are pretty meaningless in this.

With par 3's I guess you get some comparison with handicaps but even then some people lay up. We have a couple of par 3's at our place where some do not go for the green.

Our course isn't long and a couple of sneaky water hazards in driver range! So...

Par 4 - 7 Wood
Par 4 - Driver
Par 4 - 24 degree hybrid
Par 3 - 24 degree hybrid
Par 5 - 4 Wood
Par 4 - Driver
Par 3 - 7i
Par 5 - Driver
Par 4 - Driver
Par 4 - Driver
Par 4 - Driver (and reach the green...or bunker)!
Par 3 - 24 Degree Hybrid
Par 4 - 7i
Par 5 - Driver
Par 3 - 7i
Par 4 - 7 Wood
Par 4 - 7 Wood
Par 4 - Driver

It's more about being in the right place and not in water!

The Berkshire Red has 6

So does RA and it's on eof the biggest defences. Several over 200 yards and others well over 170 make them a real test. Anyhoo, back to drivers

Re: Off the tee
Par 3: 3h/5W - depending on wind
Par 5: Driver
Par 4: Driver
Par 4: 5W
Par 5: Driver
Par 3: 4i/3H
Par 4: 3H
Par 3: 7/8i
Par 4: Driver
Par 4: Driver
Par 3: 3H/4i
Par 4: Driver/3W - downwind in summer I can make the carry with the 3W
Par 3: 3H
Par 4: Driver
Par 5: Driver/3W - in summer with roll ditch comes into play so will hit 3W
Par 4: Driver/3W - tight drive so may opt to hit 3W if round going well
Par 3: 5W/3H - depending on wind direction
Par 5: Driver/3W - ditch in play I can reach downwind in hard summer conditions so will go down to 3W

That's 10 drivers, six par threes and a short par 4 and one with another ditch (7th) that forces a lay up off the tee. Strange that Hawkeye and I see the same course differently but on our day both capable of playing it with our game plans

cant read all the posts- mostly boring reading- sorry, but true.

Try this- I did once and great fun for a 4 ball- use the club you love the most, no matter driver or wedge, and play that off every tee. Great fun and makes you think, gives different scenarios you've never had at your own course.

Yeah couple of 6's and even a 7 in the thread so far!

Doubtless they have their own challenges but it sure brings a gross score down :D

(still working through my tee shot clubs but no scorecard handy...)

Depends if it's balanced out by par 5's

A par 70 can be harder than a par 72

Assuming no wind (which is v. rare at North Berwick)

Par 4 - 4 iron
Par 4 - Driver
Par 4 - Driver
Par 3 - 4 iron
Par 4 - Driver
Par 3 - 7 iron
Par 4 - Driver (if strong tail wind, hybrid to avoid a burn)
Par 5 - Driver
Par 5 - Driver (if strong tail wind, hybrid to avoid bunkers)
Par 3 - 5 iron
Par 5 - Driver
Par 4 - Driver
Par 4 - Driver
Par 4 - Driver (if strong tail wind, hybrid to avoid bunkers)
Par 3 - 4 iron
Par 4 - Driver (if strong tail wind, hybrid to avoid a burn)
Par 4 - Driver
Par 4 - Driver

Don't carry a 3W or 5W at the moment - it reduces temptation to go for a glory shot which rarely comes off, and I'm comfortable hitting driver off the tee - probably my most reliable shot.

Not the way I play Par 3's it doesn't. My scoring average on Par 3's this year is only .1 lower than my scoring average on Par 4's.

Interested in your choices having played AVGC loads - you could always miss right with a long iron/wood and be fine...

16 is an odd one and im very much the rarity. I either hit 3 wood and try and knock it on or hit a very short iron to leave myself a full wedge in from the flat part of the fairway.

Yep can pretty much miss right on most holes, miss left almost any hole and you're in trouble. Historically almost all of my misses have been left, slowly changing that thankfully! That said theyre slowly adding more trouble and some of the trees are getting that much bigger that several holes you are starting to have to miss in the right spot at least.

My choices are partly through lack of faith with driver/3 wood, partly its been running so hard and fast (ive played rounds where ive barely hit more than 3 iron all round) and partly a poor/negative approach in too many spots. Am now hitting more 3 woods and Drivers as it gets softer with a view to keeping it like that next yr!

The course being mostly defended by wind this can change and some of the 3 woods can be hybrids or 4 irons.
