Off the shoulder politicians.

The document I posted was updated and issued in 2018.

Not interested in proving anything about anyone, just trying to be helpful.
Fat fingers on the number, obviously for that I apologise.

As for the 2nd paragraph, happy to agree to disagree.

I agree it was a storm in a teacup (or was it a 'B' cup)?
There are some odd customs in the HOC regarding dress, the wearing of ties by men was fairly recently removed. I remember some odd formality once where they were passing around a top hat when speaking for some reason.

And here's a link to Erskine May about dress code...

https://erskinemay.parliament.uk/section/4889/members-dress/
Keep digging, it mentions members and talks about ties etc, as much as it specifically doesn’t mention gender it is derived from the historical records and has defined dress for men whilst never ever mentioning females.

I notice you mention “my mistake” but no acknowledgement of you mistakenly calling the rules document a dress code, which only gives guidance.

I didn’t think political threads and one up man ship could get lower but this surely wins ?

Since when did a lady showing a bare shoulder become a topic of debate ?

Is it because she is a Labour MP ?

I recall when that Moog bloke laid down on the chairs the “blue” side just laughed it off

I suspect in fact im confident that if she was a Tory MP nothing would have been said , no outrage , no questions

But thankfully this has back fired on people in a big way , a lot of money raises for charity and she has come through it with a head held high with her response

I thought when the election and Brexit was done so would all this stupidity - guess not

It talks about members and doesn't specifically mention gender. Well done, you got there in the end.

Well done ????

Tricky subject. Society has changed - what is acceptable as a 'norm' is now hard to define and varies amongst ones 'peers'.

This MP has the right to wear what she likes - whether, under the circumstances, it was a wise choice is perhaps another matter as it is likely that her attire has detracted from what she said. It was a significant departure from the norm for lady MPs who vary in their fashion choice and I wonder it was just a little bit deliberate; as an ex-actress I suspect she is well aware of the impact of her wardrobe choice.

Equality has a way to go. There are several MP's who are open that their sexuality does not match their biological identify. How would the pubic react were gay male MPs to decide the 'off-the-shoulder' look was a fashion they wish to explore?

I have quite worrying images of Johnson, Blackford or Starmer arriving in the HoC bare chested :eek:.

I believe she was in the hoc on business and had changed as she was about to depart to attend a formal occasion when was called back to the chamber to raise a point of order.

She hadn’t expected to be back in the chamber dressed as she was.

? So its not a subject of debate but you will anyway. Once again, if you dont like a thread then just pass by, its not compulsary ? Any how, thanks for your input and I wont be replying to any diatribes attempting to prove me wrong.

If we ever do get a new purpose built UK parliament in Leeds or Sheffield, what would they do with the current antiquated place? Prime location for luxury flats?
Also it's all the associated whitehall govt buildings/departments that would also be affected by parliament being elsewhere - no one mentions those.

Cant see the UK parliament ever leaving there BUT it could well be downsized by the set up of 3 or 4 regional assemblies around England in a devolving of power, that could take the pressure off Westminster and even things up for the English as you see regional govt in NI/Scotland/Wales but not in England which is not right imo. Has that got mileage?
The current place could be left as a tourist attraction. Beautiful buidling, lots of history. The current place is too small, is a health hazard behind the scenes, it leaks, electrics are bad, and the design of it is horribly confrontational.

I agree that it probably needs to stay somewhere in London as all of the depts are nearby and to move it would just be proving a point and end up being hugely inefficient. Surely there must be a disused building, area that needs re-generating etc that could house a new building? We did it for the Olympics, why not parliament? As long as it is on a tube line within 20 mins of the centre it is viable I would have thought. I don't know London well enough but I don't see how it could not be done.

I think you're wide of the mark - I think a female Tory MP would have attracted just as much, and possibly more, publicity.

Well not quite. See Theresa May's pre-PM cleavage...outrage - I am not sure there was any - but plenty of licentious comment...and I think Jacqui Smith received the same treatment back when she was on the Labour front bench.

Show a bit of shoulder or show a bit of cleavage...eh - don't female politicians have a tough job...who'd have known that their body mattered when they went into politics...maybe need to hunt for a split skirt showing a bit of thigh sitting on a back bench...pathetic.

After all this shoulder stuff I'm starting to picture Boris in a mankini and Diane Abbott in a thong. Think I need therapy.

Met her once; she was a neighbour of my nephew & his wife when their young son died suddenly & unexpectedly. She, and a number of the other neighbours, were absolutely superb in what they did for the pair of them.

She struck me as a thoroughly decent human being, unlike some of the mindless muppets deriding her over a complete non-event, and I'm not at all surprised by her responses. She's gone up even further in my estimation.
