I was at the Scottish Open a few days this week both as volunteer and spectator. I spent a while at the practice ground each day and saw most of the players and even managed a few words with some of them and their caddies and thought a few things I noticed were interesting....

1) SLDR's - sooooo many in play. Drivers, fairways and hybrids. By far the most popular club at the top end of pro bags at this event.

2) Driver Shafts - many many players had shorter shafts than we get sold, some looked a good few inches shorter.

3) Nike VR blades - in the bag of a good few non Nike players. Saw them coming out of Callaway, Titleist and TM bags.

4) Pro's play what works for them! A good number of the clubs were 'old faithfuls' that won't be replaced till they break. Original RBZ fairways were a great example that were in a few bags.

Anyway there's no major news there but it was interesting to see all the same! Some great players on show and some coming into great form ahead of the Open next week.

Biggest observation I usually take away from this and the OPEN is the rhythm, timing and tempo of all the players. No-one thrashes it.

That, and the sound of a ball being struck properly is way different to what we hear week in week out at our clubs.

Interesting and not something I was aware of...

I also noticed a lot of older Callaway Wedges in bags. Plenty of Vokey and Cleveland too but LOADS of the Callaways, again plenty of these in non Callaway players bags.

Just shows that when you find something that works you don't need to waste money buying other stuff.

I have a 12 year old 4 wood
5 year old Driver
4 year old hybrid
4 year old putter
3 year old 56* (TM ATV 52* going on evilbay shortly)
1 year old irons

I always like to spend some time watching the Pros on the range at The Open or a normal Tour event. As CMAC has said it's the rhythm, timing and tempo that are fascinating. When you watch them at their short game, it's even more interesting to see just how they go about it.

Well worth some time at any event.
