Are you talking about Okehampton itself, or the Ashbury Manor Hotel which is down that way?

I have been to okehampton many times for work my advice dont bother,as for Ashbury manor people down this way rave about it saying what value for money it is,our club had a vets open day down there in september and the word was it was superb.
It is what it is and thats a holiday course set up not to be too taxing for the once a blue moon golfer. It won't challenge you anywhere near as much as a regular pay and play or private club. I think the comment about the prison camp is a tad unfair. While it may not be 5* the rooms are adequate and the food itself is pretty good and they know how to keep their beers too.
Someone lie you SMiffy with you GM tour pro status would need a bigger challenge but if you want a few days away with some mates and a bit of fun golf and a few beers its great. You also get snooker, darts, bowling, a pool etc thrown in

I've got to be honest.....myself and a group of mates called in to have a look around there on our way back from a week-end at Lanhydrock last Summer. OK the weather was crap when we drove in, lashing down with rain and blowing a gale. But none of us were impressed.
It looked like Stalag 13 and we half expected machine gun turrets to surround the place. What we saw of the golf courses was crap. I think they have about 7 x 18 hole courses stuffed into the land they have down there now and what we saw looked boring in the extreme. Row upon row of staked trees and marker posts.
It's very cheap I know, and you can get some fantastic deals down there with all your golf thrown in and food etc. But personally I would spend maybe £50.00 more and go somewhere with one decent course.

I agree with Smiffy, went for 5 days in June and wouldn't go back. Yes it was cheap but the courses were awful. Also having lived in Devon in the past, you can virtually guaruntee rain.

I went to the ranges at Oakhampton, but it would be dangerous to play golf there when the lads are trying are trying to zero the susats on the SA80's

A group of us are having a 3 day break in Saunton North Devon in march.Playing both Saunton courses and Royal North Devon.Will report back on golf etc,but expecting good things.
Not played Oakhampton,but quality of golf does not sound that great.That is always our first consideration when booking golf trip.

Now now Homer! Thing is, if I go away on a golfing trip with my mates, it's for the golf. Yeah, the beer is nice afterwards and a game of darts or snooker in the evening is OK if there's nothing else to do.
But given the choice of either of those or a lovely golf course outside with manicured fairways, lovely greens and a good game in the offing?
On a golfing trip, I'll take the golf thanks very much

I accept that and agree. You're a good golfer and so of course the golf is important. What I'm saying is that for a bit of a lads trip where it doesn't matter too much if the hangover is raging then its not a bad choice for a UK break.
I know when I've gone away with my golfing mates from the club its all about playing the different courses and that a great round and a decent meal and a laugh is the most important thing

I have been going to Ashbury now for about 10 years with a group of mates, this year we will have 20 of us so we can guarantee a good time. I agree it doesn't look its best when you first drive in but no one can argue what good value for money the complex is. We normally stay four days, 3 nights and get 72 holes in on four different courses, plus a 9 hole fun game on the last morning.
As for the courses, the tees and fairways are really good especially when you think of the amount of traffic they get, and you hardly ever see a greenkeeper on them. OK they are not the hardest courses that you will ever play but the new Kigbeare course is a good test for anybody.
The food is both very good and plentyful and the beer is well kept and priced intellegently, no rip off's. The organisation of the whole complex is very good and extra facilities, bowls, darts, snooker and loads more are excellent.
I can understand a small group of guys wanting something more, but for a small society like ours its first class.
