Not Sure I Agree

Hard isn't it.

1 & 2 are standouts for me, could likely argue the toss over the rest until the cows come home.

For example, I'd rather play my place than SAOL, for sheer variety. But love playing SAOL for the conditioning & quality.

The Lancs border is a mysterious thing in itself. I live in GM but it's still classed as Lancs by most and we're in the Lancs Golf Union.

One thing I do know though, I need to get out to Hesketh again soon, been a few years.

If you can't have Birkdale etc.. then you can't then allow Hesketh or any of the courses in Greater Manchester.

Mine would then read:
1. Royal Lytham
2. Fairhaven
3. St Annes Old Links
4. Clitheroe
5. Pleasington
6. Ormskirk
7. Preston
8. Lancaster
9. Royal Fleetwood
10. Yarrow Valley 9 hole......

All the Liverpool/Southport clubs are in the Lancashire union too, well certainly in the ladies.

The article in the OP is obviously the current non metropolitan county of Lancashire plus Great Manchester, although Greater Manchester included some places that are historically in Cheshire and Yorkshire.

Going on the courses mentioned, and I have played all of them, I'd go with:-

1- RLytham
2- Manchester
3- Fairhaven
4- Preston
5- Pleasington
6- Saol
7 - Hesketh
8 - Lancaster
9 Bolton old links
10 North Manchester
11- Ormskirk/Clitheroe - not much in it

I'm surprised you place Preston so high, I enjoyed it but it didn't blow me away. stand out hole was the 17th but followed by a very poor & weak 18th. Very friendly clubhouse and halfway hut but a bit hilly at times.

Famed for its poor finishing hole. I love the elevation changes of it.

Dont concentrate on the bad holes on a course, cherish the good.

Not played Ormskirk or Clitheroe, not sure I'd have Fleetwood ahead of Bolton or Chorley TBH........

I'd imagine Lancaster would be pretty high up as you say.

Good to see your course rated so highly Iain. As per our earlier exchange of messages, am definitely up for a visit if we can sort it when I am up that way. Will get in touch when I know when :)

With This.. Well actually I think its way off the Mark

Its a Lancashire Top 10 and for once it rightly doesn't have
the South Southport Courses Skewing the list.
(I believe Hesketh has a PR postcode so gets in)

The list is

1- Royal Lytham
2-Fairhaven
3- SAOL
4- Pleasington
5- Clitheroe
6- Ormskirk
7- Hesketh
8 - Bolton Old Links
9 - Manchester Golf Club.
10- Fleetwood.

I think Theres been a lack of research here with at least
A couple of very good courses left out.

What do those with local Knowledge think?
Seems a fairly contrived list. I can't complain too much about the top 3, but the exclusion of Preston and inclusion of Fleetwood seem to indicate that the list was compiled by someone desperate to include as many links courses as possible (most likely to compensate for the exclusion of the great traditional links courses).

Manchester should be higher though. Probably above Pleasington for me.
