Howdy hi,

Over the last couple of months I've been looking for a change of career. I really move more into journalism / press stuff and as some of you may already know I write for an American music website at the moment, as well as working in comms in t'music industry.

Things have got pretty stagnant here with a recent merger and the only opportunity for progression would be to go down an IT route which is not something that I particularly want to do - it's not where my best skills lie and doesn't interest me in the way writing and comms does.

After sending of 100(0?)'s of applications I've hardly heard a thing back from most companies and as I'm on my own down here family-wise haven't got a great network to tap into to try and get interviews etc; I thought I'd chance my arm on here!

So, anybody know of any jobs going in or around London?!

what sort of thing do you want to do? Are you in linkedin? get on there and get connecting! i get headhunted daily, it can be very good though!

Chairman of the Man U supporters club? Sorry, Jim - good luck in whatever you do next. What about the other golf magazines, apart from GM? Any other hobbies that you have that also have magazines etc. I can only imagine that it would be a labour of love then with the wages not necessarily being the be all and end all.

At the moment have been applying for roles like 'communications officer', 'PR Executive' etc for some of the bigger companies - Sky, BBC etc. Am on linkedin (I think we're actually 'connected'), although there's a helluva lot of people with similar skills / qualifications as me looking for work at the moment (2:1 Degree, 3 years working)

Would love to write for a sports publication of pretty much any description, but getting a role creating content is neigh on impossible without dropping back and doing work experience / interning, which I just don't think I can afford to do. It's the age old thing of not being able to get into that industry because I don't have the experience, but I can't get the experience to get the experience (if that makes sense). The music writing is sort of covering the enjoyment of writing aspect so don't even mind if it's just doing internal comms or PR for a big boring company, just something which sees me creating and sharing content and working with people, rather than looking at a database of user's rights to the intranet and putting them in the appropriate groups to view the limited content I do get chance to create.

Oh yeh! LOL

Well make your profile stand out, get colleagues and peers to recommend you, start following companies you like, join groups in the industry and make comments (sensible ones!)

CMAC might be able to help with some pointers for you too as its his cuppa tea...

I have a girlfriend who works for Sky in a PR capacity. I can ask her to contact you or maybe you could link in to her. PM me if you want a name.

yes please, that would be great. have applied for a few things at sky and generally don't hear back despite their application process being extremely laborious. will pm you now

As far as I can see the majority of "specialist" publications these days prefer to rely upon freelancers. Can be OK in the long term if you are prepared for the insecurity in the initial stages.
