Reaching out to the hive mind that is the Forum. Wife and I are in Norwich on Saturday. Never been there. Any recommendations on places to see, bars, food, anything really. Just going somewhere different with no real plans for a day out but would be nice to get a few suggestions.

I don’t know Norwich beyond travelling through by bus and occasionally walking through the city between jobs, but the cathedral quarter has always seemed worth taking a closer look at. Looks like it has a decent selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

It’s a nice city to wander about, the centre is relatively compact. Cathedral is worth a visit, and it’s nice just to look around the shops in the lanes.

Be warned, it’s Norwich v Ipswich at 12pm on Saturday, so the city will be busy before and after. Where are you travelling from and what mode of transport? Station will be rammed with police to welcome Ipswich fans, and they will be escorted back to the station after the game too.

What kind of food are you after? Pub grub / something special etc? Spoilt for choice for pubs, do you like real ale or a trendy wine bar?

What sort of things do you like doing? There is a lot of history in Norwich - 2 cathedrals, the castle, underground street tours. Near the station you have a retail outlet plus bars, restaurants along the riverside (these are more chain restaurants). In the city itself there is a large market and 2 shopping centres, there are some lovely restaurants & bars along St Benedicts Street, Elm Hill, Tombland. If you like a cocktail then the tipsy jar is a bit different, the wine cellar is great for wine (obviously) and does food too. Biddy's if you want an afternoon tea, grosvenor for fish & chips and opposite that you have St Gregory's church which is now an antique centre and a great way to waste 45 mins!

Or bring golf clubs!

I would suggest avoiding riverside on a match day! Especially given it’s the east Anglian derby. But I do agree generally it’s just a nice place to lose a day, without the burden of feeling like there is loads that has to be seen and done. The only must for me would be the cathedral, beyond that, just wander about and see where it takes you.

Getting the train in from Grantham. Arriving after kick off but may get stuck a bit later. Hoping to just wander round, find light bites and street food type stuff on the way round but also happy to have a sit down if anything leaps out. Looking for more cocktail/wine bars as with my wife so less need for real ale.

Agree - we cross posted so I had forgotten about the derby! Definitely avoid that end of the city

Yeah, I think the plan is pretty much going to be to head towards the Cathedral and see what we find. Trying to be a bit more spontaneous so going with a few basic ideas of what is around but without any real plans.

At least the Ipswich fans will not be coming via Grantham. Last time I took my wife out for the day, we were getting the train to Nottingham when Brighton were playing there. Delays meant that the trains from down south were pulling in seconds before the train to Nottingham so the fans were just piling out of one on to the other. Took us over 2 hours to get on a train that day. The Brighton fans around the station were impeccably behaved though so all credit to them.
