Just found out today that I need to take someone to Norwich tomorrow and will have 6 or 7 hours to kill whilst they do what they need to do.

So... what are the decent courses in/around Norwich (and I don't want to stray to far away from Norwich in case I need to make a hasty retreat to pick up my "charge") and how likely is it that a spontaneous call to the club at 9.30am will see me obtain a tee time at said club?

Eaton looks like the best course, Bawburgh is the closest to where I need to get to and Wensum Valley looks another potential option..... is there anywhere obvious I'm missing? Ive played Dunston Hall many years ago and for personal reasons would rather not go to Barnham Broom.

Bawburgh. Best course and set up/facilities and very good at short notice. Eaton is ok but I don't rate the course as much. Avoid the others.

Bawbrugh is a good call, but they use some of the fairways as a car park for a recent show and it rained a lot so maybe a bit of a mess.

Royal Norwich still going but due to close soon maybe worth a try, if your near Bawburgh probable the next closest are Barnham and Dunston other than that Thetford is not too far probably 25-30 min drive.

Google maps says 38 mins to great Yarmouth, is that too far? GY is very quirky but I always find it very enjoyable and it is fairly reasonable.

I've not played it but i hear Sheringham is excellent.

The only ones i've played in that neck of the woods are Thetford (used to be a member there for a while) and also played Bury St Edmunds (a while ago now).

Thetford is a good track.

Good advice right there

If you need central Norwich then Royal Norwich is worth a knock and won't be in it's current state for much longer. Eaton is also good and both are better than Sprowston.

As others have said Thetford is very good and Sherringham is magnificent .

Thanks folks....yes Sheringham, Yarmouth and Thetford all too far away....but good shouts quality wise....indeed I've played Thetford and am due back there in a few weeks.

As it happened I pitched up at Bawburgh and they got me out within 20 minutes. Can see where they used areas for the parking but none of it interfered with the golf.

Some nice holes and some downright ugly holes. Greens were the courses main defence with lots of undulations and slopes...reasonably quick and in very good condition.

Would play it again if in the area.

A lot of years have passed since my RAF days down there, was a member at Bawburgh for a while, much better than Costessey Park and Wensum Valley where I also used to play (that said Wensum was a new course and I left the area 18 years ago so probably come on a lot since then). However I can highly recommend Cromer, cracking course about 15 miles north of the city.
