"Nobody buys 5 woods anymore"

I've just bought one and at the moment I'm loving it - I bought a used TM R5 Dual and so far it has been arrow straight and so easy to hit from fairway or rough and it only cost 25 quid :D

The majority of Amateur golfers will benefit more from a 5 wood than an 18 degree hybrid

Simply because the majority of amateur golfers don't generate enough swing speed to make the best use of a hybrid with around 18 degrees of loft.
One of the US websites did some tests a while back.
Fast swingers still hit the 5 wood further than the hybrid but, due to the extra spin produced by the 5w - lower COG - there wasn't much to choose, just a few yards.
Slower swingers, and by that I mean those less than 100mph which is the majority, hit the 5w further than hybrid by about 10-15 yards due to that extra spin that costs a fast swinger. The spin keeps the ball in the air longer, increasing carry and distance.
There will always be exceptions to any rule, however the majority of golfers will benefit from a 5w over the 18 hybrid.

Yup wouldn't be without 5wood (or my hybrid for that matter) its not an either or for me as the loft spacing (plus head size/shaft length etc) mean that its a nice distance gap between them

I've been debating this in my head for a few days now, I do like my hybrid but I'm not convinced it goes any further than a 4h at 22degrees, I know the 5w goes longer so am pondering a 3w,5w,22 deg hybrid combo with my 5i being my next club (due to jacked lofts)
Any suggestions on a nice low profile 5w?

While I don't take the 3w out on every round this is pretty much what I have (with an additional 25 hybrid on top of the 22 because the 5I doesn't always play nice)

I've just bought a 5w, Trackman showed there was no point with a 3w as too close to the driver, so just driver & 5w at top end of the bag. Only used it at the range and it goes far & straight, will see how it performs for real on Sunday.

My bag will now be, driver, 5w, 4h 22deg, then 5i. The 5w will bridge the gap from 200 yards and over that is currently lacking due to the 3h 18 deg not being used.

Ergo why i am swapping when i have some pennies!!

I agree with this. More often or not If I'm deep rough them a hybrid or any wood is probably the wrong choice to get me back in play. A wedge or iron out would better. From a decent lie I just can't get the 18deg hybrid airborne, have not trouble with the 22deg so use this most often even if I know it's not got the length I need. I'm hoping the 5w give me the extra length to bridge the gap.

They've arrive now. Great service from Golfbidder, order at 1pm yesterday delivered at 10am today.

The Cobra was described as condition 8, however it's brand new! Still has the sticker on the face and doesn't look to have hit a ball. The sole has a few marks on it but only what you'd expect from it being picked up in shop a few times. This club has the option to change the face to open, closed and neutral. It's set at open, can some one tell me if the club tools are universal or not or do I have to find a Cobra tool? My club pro doesn't stock Cobra but is he likely to have a tool that will fit?

The Cleveland was described as a 7. This has range matt marks on the sole and the grip is more worn but the face is clean and free of marks. I'm used to looking at my clubs with sky marks all over them!!

The only small issue I have is that the Cleveland was picture with a Cleveland head cover but it's been sent with a plain black tad pole one instead.

I'm looking forward to trying them out tomorrow morning (in 30mph winds!)

I have an old 5 wood in the garage with 21° loft it was a good club back in the mid nineties. I currently have a 7 wood in the bag with 21° loft. My 5 wood, currently in the bag has a loft of 18° that is somewhere between a 4 wood and a 3 wood of the mid nineties.

So, IMO not all clubs are equal, look at the loft you need to fill the gaps in your bag, not the number on the bottom of the club.

my 22 is my 4 iron replacement. it goes further than a 4i but I grip down slightly to take a little off if I need 4 iron distance. :)

You're right, we're talking about todays 5w most of which are around 18 deg and comparing them to todays hybrids that are also 18deg. It could have a 98w on the bottom for all I care.

It was a tongue in cheek comment as lofts have been tweaked over the years and now a 5i is more like the loft of an original 4i.
