It has struck me how quickly those who played Nike equipment changed their gear as quickly as they did once Nike quit the scene. Surely if your equipment is what you like you would play it as long as you could, at least past that season. It does make you wonder how many play with gear that they dont really like but make up for it with the financial aspect.

Or perhaps they are so good that, within reason, it doesn't matter what they use.

I am surprised that they are changing some of the eqpt, putters for example which don't date. Drivers, hybrids etc etc same

Irons I get as if you have ever seen a pro's irons they have a worn dot in the sweet spot which they hit over and over and the grooves really do wear down. That means they need to change them quite often, wedges particularly.

I suppose the question is are Nike still providing club support to the pro's. Can they give them more irons, wedges, lorry support at tournaments? If they are not offering that support then they have no choice but to move on.

My post is probably quite naive. In reality most chase the money. Silly boy.

The initial reports when Nike stopped was that all operations had stopped, so no tour support or new equipment at all.

Their Nike contract may have been quite restricted in what they can use, so now that they are free of the contract ties they can literally use anything they want, and yet still ensure they are paid the Nike (apparently Nike pay the difference of any shortfall that they take up with new contracts)

IIRC Nike said they would stop all support by the end of 2016, i.e. no more tour trucks, etc.

So players could possibly just get a couple of sets (I guess Henrik Stenson did this with his Callaway irons), but since there are so many other manufacturers out there, why not switch to something new?

I think the main issue is what if a driver, 3 wood or putter breaks mid season. They can't get a replacement due to no support truck, so they have to switch and try getting used to new equipment mid season which they wont want to do. So makes sense to do it now when they have time to adjust/tweak to their needs and not need to worry about what happens if something goes wrong.

Biggest example of this is Jordan at the masters last year, his driver cracked and yeah he had a replacement but it still didnt feel right to him and he had to work it out in his warm up.

Surely each staff player would have a selection of replacements all the time, I read Rory had a years supply of the Nike ball, but the tour trucks whilst maybe being branded help all the players regardless of whos clubs they use.

Whilst other trucks may help with adjustments and repairs they will obviously prioritise their own staff players and, in any event, cannot provide any new or replacement equipment.

I don't see Callaway or whoever not bending over backwards for Rory or Tiger!

Depends if they have been signed up by other mfrs. All trucks help each other's players but if Rory or Tiger had signed to another OEM then they would find themselves in the queue.

I'm sure some of the players would be able to adjust clubs themselves.

I know Ian Poulter does his own grips from time to time. Nice to sometimes see some players act normal and if they know full well how to do it, do it like the rest of us!

I wouldnt be suprised if you saw some of that Nike equiptment going back in the bag if they dont get on with their current gear, not iron sets or drivers but fairway woods, hybrids and putters, this happens all the time with equiptment they have no contract on.

He does do his own grips, but at home. If any Pro needed grips during a tournament they wouldn't have the facilities outside the Tour trucks
Makes sense to change now, as was said earlier, once a club breaks/wears out/stops working they can't replace it now.

they do have facilities. the tour trucks there dont only work on their own gear. pxg didn't have a truck until recently.

i know mizuno players where using the titlest tour truck on a recent event

What I meant was that they would have to go to a tour truck if they were going to do it themselves and, as said, if they're not signed to that brand they may have to wait in line whilst Staff player's kit gets done..
If Rory takes his Apex's to the Callaway truck I suspect Monksy will do them stat!

i have visions of rory stood in a line outside the titlest tour truck. like a fish and chip shop!!

What i find interesting is that Rory is playing a driver that is not released yet, a prototype Odessey putter, again, not released yet, and a set of Apex MB irons, that i have never seen for sale. And he isn't even a Callaway staffer.

How does that work?
