Next years British masters

The Grove has held a large tournament before, the Amex WGC in 2006. I went on the Friday and it seemed a good course, not bad for spectating. Not the toughest course ever, a certain Mr Woods won it with 23 under, 8 shots better than Poulter in 2nd place.

Tiger eagled the par 5 18th on 3 days out of 4, when he settled for a birdie. Thinks he drove a 350 yard par 4 a couple of times too.

The Grove is the ultimate modern pay and play course. It has no members and is mostly played by taxi drivers and corporate types. Went to the WGC tournament there a few years ago and it was ripped apart by Tiger Woods in his prime. Only good thing from my point of view is that it is quite close to where I live!
 
I think the Grove will be a decent enough venue. OK it might not have the history of a Wentworth or Woburn (and it's own link with the British Masters) but it's going to be decent enough to get a large number of fans around to see quite a lot of the play. If they really let the rough grow up, it could actually be a test especially if it's windy as it's an exposed bit of land in places. Has the actual date been set

The Grove is not even the best golf course in Watford! West Herts is probably better, and then not far away you have Moor Park and Sandy Lodge.
 
Anyone who says the grove is easy needs to play the "back on black " tournament they run. Some serious rough and crazy pin positions

I think its not the toughest test for big hitting pros - they will eat it up tbh

Agreed its not the best but that's not the issue, West Herts whilst a good course just would not work from a major tournament perspective. Moor Park possibly (it has in the past). The Grove will offer good facilities/access etc for players, fans and sponsors.
 
When the WGC was at the Grove, it was only woods who took it apart. The rest scored about the same as scores on other courses used on tour. It will be fine.
I would also put The Grove over Moor Park, West Herts, and miles better than Sandy Lodge. I have played all of them many times, some more than others, certainly. If they had membership, I'd join tomorrow.
There is also the hotel on site, which is a pretty useful facility if you are holding a tourney.

I played the front 9 with GM when we did that thing with more than one flag, cant remember what its called. I cannot remember the course at all but you think its good ye? I remember it being nice just a little young feeling and a little premiership footballery as a style. If that's a thing...

I'm happy anyhow, nice and close to me again!
 
It's parkland, modern, American, so lots will hate it for that alone. It is always well presented, it has some nice holes, a few indifferent ones, some elevation changes, a bit of water, some rough (which can be savage), what more do you want. Its over 7000 yards off the tips, so it's not short. It's expensive, but then I never pay full ticket. Ok, it's not Hanckley Common, but so what? I can think of a lot of worse courses.

Maturity wise, it's much better than any of the courses round here which were built at the same time, or later. The grass is a lush carpet, where as to me, the likes of centurion and bearwood were a bit wet, and the grass a bit sparse when I played them.

Most of the pros will have played worse, and to me, that includes the Marquess, which is a swamp.

I think this is spot on. Much better than centurion imo and a great test of golf.

Played the Grove a couple of times, once the day after the WGC in a corporate with the Sunday pin positions. I think, overall, it is a good course, with as Murph says some elevation changes and interesting features. For me, though it needs 30 years growth to better define the holes and some of the holes are rather unmemorable. As a Tour event, I think it will be fine, and can accommodate the crowds as seen in 2006.

If it was a members club, I would still prefer Bearwood Lakes where I currently play. It shouldn't be any less dry than The Grove and the grass is not currently or usually sparse. Haven't played Centurion yet.

Once the Centurion matures and clubhouse is built I would put it on a par with Bearwood

Bearwood for me is the best Parkland Modern golf course I have played
 
I think if they let the rough at the Grove get long and lush it won't be a push over. There will be birdies and also a few big scores. I'm looking forward to it. Has the date been officially announced?
