Newer isn't necessarily better?

I got fitted for a Callaway Diablo Tour driver last summer and have been using it with a bit of success.

But, on a bit of a whim, I decided to get my old G2 driver out once again. It just felt better so I decided to put them to the test on Trackman at my last lesson.

The G2 is only about 10 yards longer than the Diablo Tour and the dispersion is much better.

I've no idea how old the G2 is? 6, 7, 8 years' old? And it is comfortably outperforming brand new kit.

With all the R11s and 910s being flavour of the month at the moment, are they (and the others) really better than a decent older driver?

I reckon its down to the individual and what you are most comfortable with.

the G2 probably felt familiar and you know what its limitations/capabilities are and felt more confident using it

then again maybe new stuff is just a load of hype and bling to tempt us man folk to go for something new and shiny :D

I had a G2 driver for years and only got rid of it when I cracked the face. Too many 300yds drives out of the sweet spot I guess

:o ;)

Its a good question.......and undoubtably, when I caught one well with my G5 it went very well, but often it just didnt go quite where I wanted.

The 910D3 has only been in my bag about 3weeks, but so far, and I dont know why, it is undoubtably THE most consistent Driver I have ever used.

If it continues, it must make a difference to my game and scores, so watch this space.

I guess a pretty good place to look to see if the technology has advanced that much would be the PGA tour, considering they get access to all of the latest and best technology available...

In 2010 - 12 players averaged over 300 yards for driving distance.

In 2009 - 13 players
In 2008 - 13 players
In 2007 - 18 players
In 2006 - 20 players
In 2005 - 26 players
In 2004 - 14 players
In 2003 - 9 players
In 2002 - 1 player (Daly)
In 2001 - 1 player (Daly)
In 2000 - 1 player (Daly on 301, Tiger 2nd on 298, 3rd place..... Davis Love III on 288... Ten yards back!!)
In 1999 - 1 player (Daly)

So yeah obviously there are lots of other variables to consider but in this very basic analysis it would seem that technology does seem to have kind of reached its limits, in terms of distance anyway.

I often take out my 2 old TM Burners to the range when Im hitting my current driver badly and have always kind of thought that it goes pretty much exactly the same as my current stick... deoesnt stop me from wanting to own every new driver that hits the market though !!

I used to love my G2 and would still be using it now if it hadn't cracked across the sole.

I've always been a bit sceptical about how much better newer is days. It's more about what suits the individual than the age.

I have had my ping Rapture for a good few years now, i have just upgraded to the Rapture V2 because it had the shaft in I wanted still second hand though.

Interesting!

Couple that with the average accuracy on Tour and you've got some pretty good stats there on the subject.

The intangible bit is the confidence that a new bit of kit gives you. Put a confident swing on pretty much anything and it'll go better than a more timid one.

I'm definitely attracted to the new shiny too - hence buying the Diablo Tour last year.
