So i'm looking for a starter golf set and seen a couple of them, like the idea of these rather than buying irons, putter, bag etc to get me going...
First one Wilson Deep Red MOI High £350

Second Wilson Ultra DCG £220

Third Wilson Fatshaft V £350 quid

Like the look of the Deep Reds, a good mate at work who is golf mad said they are a good package for a starter set, can anyone think of any other good package sets max 350 quid???

Well spotted GB!

I must admit, there is some seriously decent and cheap(ish) stuff out there.

I mean Velo-CT fairways for £29.99 with prolaunch platinum (presumably).....how good is that?

what i want is a complete set for 350 quid max thats why i thought that wilson deerp red set looks ok, done a few sites where i've bought irons, drivers, woods, putter and bag etc into the basket and it comes up far more than what i'm prepared to pay, don't fancy buying stuff all split to be honest...

Don't buy new get second hand gear, apart from my driver all my gear was pre owned and I got a bargain on it all, it's all in great nick and it's all quality. Save the VAT and get down to your local store and rifle through the second hand bit, or if you are confident, E-Bay.Save a fortune.

just checked that benross stuff, totted it all up and for the cheapest irons, driver, woods etc it comes to 410 quid and i have'nt even added a golf bag to that!!!
surely that wilson set is good value, maybe in a few years time if i'm playing well then that for me would be the time to upgrade all the stuff to the top more costlier brands to move things along, i would of being looking at second hand stuff on ebay but i'm concerned about all the fakes on there now, something i would'nt off thought about until someone mentioned it

I got my Mizuno's 3-pw for £100.00 in as new condition, the trouble with starter sets is that when it's time to move on you need to find another new starter to flog them to.

Personally I went for the VT Xtreme with te Aldila DVS shaft for £39.00

Direct Golf were doing the Wilson Fatshaft FSX irons for £150 with free Fatshaft FSX stand bag (normally £80) the other week. Not sure if the offer is still on but seemed a reasonable starter set if you wanted brand new.

I got a golden bear starter set for around £200 and it's done me well. The thing with starter sets is that the woods don't tend to be very good, I changed my driver and 3 wood after 12months to Benross.

Thing is if you get hooked the starter set will soon go and has little residual value. Certainly £350.00 would seem alot for a starter set. I began with a set of Hippo OSIV and they were OK to start with but only cost about half of what you were looking to pay. If I started again I would go for a reasonable set of irons, a hybrid, a 3 or 5 wood and a putter then replace as I needed.

I only suggested the Benross gear as it is cheap and great quality at the price. Some older sets of irons can be bought new for about £150 now and would be a good start and would probably last longer than a starter set. From what I have seen, the starter sets have little resemblance in quality to what the manufacturer normally makes and I know a bloke who had a Wilson set that was awful, cheap clubs with the Wilson name stamped on for a bit of credibility

hhmmm defo food for thought with all these comments, so you think i should look maybe for some decent irons then and buy a hybrid, putter and a wood, may have a good look around then on the sites and see what i can get then, i'm not adverse to second hand as long as the are still in good nick and not fake....
cheers for the tips and pointers

Get yourself down to your local driving range and see if they have second hand sets. Mine does and if I were just starting out I'd definitely be shopping there.

I sold my Mizuno MX19 iron set, 4 to SW, for £100 on ebay earlier this year. A good starter set of irons. In fine nick as well. I sold a cart bag for £30 I think, late last year on ebay as well. So that's £130 so far, which leaves £220 for a driver / woods / hybrid and a putter. Should be easily achievable.

Starter sets are okay, but you won't get the same quality components as you would in a pre-owned set of quality clubs. I know they look all nice with their matching headcovers and bag, and matching brand everything. But don't be fooled. Most of us on here have fairly mixed bags. And if you think that the whole matching image thing will make you look like a Pro. You couldn't be more wrong. (Sorry if that comes across a bit abusive, it's not meant to. I almost went down the same route as you many moons ago, and I'm so glad I didn't.)

ps. My driver is pre-owned!

If ebay scares you. There are plenty of folks on here that will take a look at the item and give you an opinion of them with regards to it's value. Just beware of new clubs at seriously discounted prices. Fakes!

Sorry if the tone hasn't come across as friendly as I would have liked. (Several beers and a couple of large Scotch's!!)
