New York, JFK to Manahatten

Never had a problem at JFK.

L.A. and Washington are different stories, however.

Far and away the worst I've encountered. First off the plane, no one else there, plenty of desks manned, and made to stand whilst they waited for the Americans to saunter off, whom they then processed first. We could have been well gone without holding any of them up. Once the Yanks cleared, as Murph said, cut down the staff & make the Johnny Foreigners wait longer.

I'm not sure how they think that presents a good image of their capital, or their country, to the world, but then I'm not sure they're bothered what we think.

As others have said, the taxi fare to manhattan is fixed. There is usually a sign in the back of the taxi outlining how much it costs.

You could also look into SuperShuttle. Used them before in other US cities and they’re fine. You could get a shared ride for pretty cheap, but the non-shared rides are pretty reasonable too. If you used Supershuttle you could book in advance for peice of mind.
