After collecting the new irons and hybrid yesterday evening, I hit the course at 8:00 a.m. this morning.

The MP53's have a shorter shaft than the MX200's they are replacing, and my pro has told me he wants me to grip down the shaft compared to how I normally grip, this took a little getting used to, causing a few thin(ish) contacts early in the round. There is much more feedback on mis-hits, but not as much forgiveness, no doubt owing to the smaller head and cavity, however shot shaping seems easier even for someone of my limited ability.

The MP53's feel like they have a different balance to the MX200's, but I'm not sure if that's down to the shaft or head or combination of both.

A couple more rounds and a range session or two to get used to the new shaft and hand position should be all thats required.

Also gave the CLK a couple of goes - had a bad lie from my drive on the par 5 12th, ball sat on the downslope of a fairway bunker in longish grass, ball above the feet and some doubt as to whether or not the ball was sat in a slight hollow. Yesterday I would have been taking a 5 or 6 iron at best, today the 20 deg hybrid was given it's head. A straight and powerful ball flight ended greenside, a chip and a putt for a birdie! - I'm converted! :)

Even the predicted rain held off until we were on the 18th green and made it into the clubhouse in time to take advantage of the pre 11:00 a.m. bacon butty and coffee deal! :D

Sorry if I’m picking up the wrong signals here. The shafts are shorter and the pro asked you to grip down the shaft a bit………..very, very strange. Unless you were gripping off the end of the shaft before or you’ve been badly fitted.

You then go on about the different feel and balance. Did you not know this when you first tried them. Then you go on about shot shaping. Okay you say limited ability, but shot shaping. I know a lot of really good players. + golfers, scratch golfers, 1 and 2 HC players and very few can shape the ball or really want to.

No disrespect, but I think you need to wash all this nonsense away and get out and play.

I think the old irons had been fitted incorrectly, in fairness the term fitted in their case was a bit of a misnomer. I was also gripping right at the very top of the grip, I guess that was something that had just crept in over a period of time.

At the fitting session the feel and balance was less apparent in comparison to my old clubs, probably because we were chopping and changing shafts and heads. Not suggesting they feel wrong in any way, just different.

I rarely try to shape the ball, if I am on the fairway then a straight shot is all thats required. The point is I can move it either way if I want to (not necessarily every time I want to mind!), and it appears easier to do with the MP53's.

With equal respect, I don't think saying they feel different and that the combination of a different shaft length and grip will take a couple of sessions to feel right is nonesense and I do play plenty ;)

@ Tommo, the post is also called "First Impressions".

They are great irons, I got a great feel from them from day one but they feel more and more normal as the new magic dust wears off and they become your norm. It is much easyer for me to move the ball on the range, not trying to do that on course.

More than anything, and I will do a review in time, I find them short but accurate and that is exactly the trade off I was prepared to make.

They are soft like butter so look after them as they mark easy.

What shaft did you get?
