I have recently taken up golf as my main sport and joined a local club.
I have invested in lessons and putting in the time to improve my game.
Went out in monthly medal Sunday looking to put in a good score and was heavily penalized by the state of the course.
On one hole I went less than 10ft off the side of the green, hit a provisional in the same place and didn't find either of them!!
I understand missing fairways / greens results in tougher shots, but feel the penalty of the grass / course is severe!
Is this normal at this time of year, or should I make my thoughts known to the club?

It's normal to have all UK courses set up tougher than the US Open

...we like it that way as it gives the greenkeepers more time to lean on their spades and drink coffee

(OR... you are right,.... some courses take the biscuit!)

Our rough has really thickened up at the moment and is very punishing for anything wayward even to the extent of not even being able to find your ball. It's not normal, I think it's more down to the weather extremities we have experienced lately. Hoping our greenkeepers are going to cut the rough before the monthly medal on Sunday but somehow I doubt it, more likely to see them sitting in the bar.

Not only has the rain from the last 3-4 weeks made the rough seriously soggy, but it's also become juicy and green staff haven't been able to cut it very short. So just long enough for the ball to sit down and be hard to find! Further off the fairway, the 'long' rough is now virtually hay'! So unusually tough at traditionally wide open courses. It'll certinly train you to be straight!

Welcome to the madhouse btw!

Well and truely in the madhouse!!!
My life now revolves around when I am next on the course or range!!!

Yes.

and

No.

Our course is almost impossible a.t.m.

It's not the groundstaff's fault, it's been a bad time for getting the mowers out. Everyone is feeling it, and they're not going to get it back to sensible with big competitions on the horizon.

Today, the 5th hole = 9 yards wide at my landing distance.

The 9th hole = 12 yards wide.

and the 4th? less than 3 yards to the right of the marker post.

- - -

just to add insult to injury, the par 5 12th was 32 yards wide today?

BONKERS. :)

Our course has penal rough no more than 15 yards wide of the fairway. The semi rough is full of deep and penal clover like rough so its at least 1/2 a shot penalty. Lost a ball in the semi rough on the 7th last week
