"New Shineys" for Snelly...

New shineys? God I hate that turn of phrase.

That aside, I have just treated myself to some new irons. This was prompted by two things. First, the thread on how far back would you go when buying new clubs. This reminded me of a couple of sets that I had a while ago and I felt a little nostalgic for them.

Secondly, I played a links course on Sunday evening and a couple of things happened. One was that I took an old Ping 2 iron out with me and hit every single fairway with it and with the run on offer at the moment, it was a pretty long ball too. I had forgotten what a good iron it was. No feel whatsoever but a lovely crunching strike and pretty long. The other point of note was that on a par 3, I hit a lovely 4 iron to the green, right out of the screws. One of my playing partners then stepped up and hit an okay-ish 5 iron about the same distance. I then had a hit with it and hit a nice enough shot that went further than my 4 iron! His irons were called Ping i15.

These things combined to remind me of a golfing truism. Ping clubs are about a club longer than most others that I have played with. So since Sunday, I have been scouring eBay for a set and have just won an auction for a set of irons that match the 2 iron that I played so well with. I am now the owner of Ping Zing 2's and have bought some new grips to spruce them up with too. I have no idea what the shafts are but it should be a bit of fun to play with them again and it will be great to have irons like Spock's ears in the bag once more.

What you have to do now is get them retro fitted.
Throw away the 3 and 4 iron and replace with hybrids.
Choose between a myriad of shafts/ torque/kick points weight and stiffness and not forgetting a new set of wedges (4 at least) with the corresponding grind to match your swing/skill/type of course.
Then and only then will you stand a chance of breaking 80.
Have fun :)

I'm not sure anyone can break 80 without a strong 3wood and an adjustable driver as well nowadays

Looking at the new models being brought out at the moment, I think you also need a driving iron.

Ohh... Yes... things were always better in the past, we should keep them like that... No need for new things... Mock them... ;)

Congratulations on buying one of the ugliest sets of irons ever made!

Love it Murph!

And you are quite right of course.

The only uglier clubs I have ever had were the McGregor DoctorX. They were great, and hideous.

So when are you going to "Game" them next? ;)

Next Tuesday if I can get the re-gripped in time. I am playing at Swinley Forest. Then Sunningdale on August 22nd.

Dirty jobs but someone has to do them! :)

So not new.

And not shiny either.

Just as well you used quotes, otherwise we'd start not believing anything you post! :D

Truly ugly clubs, but very effective! Hit some Be-Cu (or is that Cu-Be) a little while ago. Felt nice. Enjoy them.

I'd have thought a man of your golfing calibre would have invested in a set of McGregor blades? Perfect for your round at Swinley! Be interesting to hear your thoughts on Swinley, don't wish to be the bearer of bad news but I've heard their greens have been steadily detoriating for the last 10 years :(

I have played twice there in the last 3 years and they were not brilliant but adequate. Whatever they are like, I will still love it. Very quirky but very enjoyable.
