Howdy folks, when I started playing a couple of years back I picked up an Odyssey "White hot" small mallet soft inset putter which has been my faithful companion since. On one of my random ebay trawls I picked up a Tri-ball with the metal insert for next to nothing with the intention of selling it on. Well blow me if I'm not holing everything with it. I find the metal insert and the heavy weight much easier to putt on the slow greens at the moment, do ye guys switch between putters depending on the speed of greens or am I adding another unnecessary variable to an already variable game?

Or is it just that when you get a new putter you hole everything until you start to miss more than you hole and begin to doubt that it was the greatest purchase ever?!

I got fitted for my Scotty a year ago at the end of this month.

Best purchase I ever made

Regardless of different greens and speeds I adjust my stroke to account for these differences, mainly speed.

I'm a frim believer in getting to know your equipment and gauging a feel or how it plays.

I'm doing this at the minute having replaced much of my bag, but the putter stays glued in there as usual.

If yu're going to spend the cash on a putter, make sure its the right one for you and get a fitting

I don't subscribe to changing putters for different greens - but do accept that in extreme situations (ie when they aren't really greens at all!) a putting stroke can completely break down because of how hard you have to hit it; but this simply isn't putting if playing on such surfaces.

Even then the best solution is to add an amount of lead tape to the putter head at the time.

As to why this putter works for you - only you can answer that really; just be thankful

Swapped to a light putter when I moved courses, new course's fairways are quicker than my old course's greens!

Thanks chaps, so far in my golfing career I've spent £35 on my #5 and £15 on the triball, so its not breaking the bank! I never intended to change putter, but I took both with me for the last couple of rounds. I felt I had to ram the softer putter on long putts and just as you say Duncan the stroke broke down completely, on one I felt I couldn't hit it hard enough. The heavy metal face of the triball lets me keep a much better smoother motion and tempo from distance, and the putts are better for it.

Your point is exactly why I asked the question Gareth, should you get one set up and stick with it through thick and thin, or is there room for Horses-for-courses in the bag? There's horses in everything else.

I try different putters in shops but nothing I've tried rolls it like Marilyn :)

I've tried alsorts of putters, and the one I have now is perfect its not a huge brand name and is a cut down belly putter so the heavier weight I find is perfect.

Stick with one putter regardless of green speed and adjust your feel accordingly

Just bought a 2nd putter. Love my Spider Ghost but just fancied a back up to keep her on her toes. My back up is a mad contraption but I like "different" if it fits my eye!

Never changed my putter but would very much love a scotty....my problem is I putt well enough to keep my £35 cleveland in the bag.

I always feel that your putter is one of the hardest clubs to get used to which is why I've had the same one for many years, I'm very resistant to changing it for the fear of what it might do to my game despite the fact my putting is average at best at the moment.

I hear you Akie, I've been pretty certain that since Ive picked up the game all the putts I missed were my fault! I never held the putter responsible but the greens at our place are slow then I played 9 holes on a different course yesterday evening and the greens were sssllloooooowwwwwwww! I felt I had to smack long putts which meant my stroke went to pot. The heavier metal putter did a lot of the work for me. I know once the greens at our dry out and the summer comes (hopefully we might get one this year) that the greens will be lightening at our place and I'll be damn glad of the softer insert. It just got me wondering if anyone else changed putters on the basis of green speed.

I did swap between putters depending on conditions but my milled Odyssey #9 has such a lovely feel I can use it regardless of pace with confidence

I've had the same putter for the last 5 years ( YES callie ) and it seemed to be the one for me,but during a game last year Iborrowed my mates putter who had Bettinardi, and it felt better, the reason for this was because he'd had it shortened to 32 inches from 34,the end result is that I've done the same and it does feel a whole lot better and I'm making better putts.

what length is the shaft?

Just chopped it to 32.5" and hopefully the Super Stroke Slim Lite will arrive tomorrow.
